Science with lava, water, and cave ins!
« on: July 11, 2012, 06:25:47 pm »

I made an interesting discovery while toying with cave ins.

Just to try it I decided to make a great big bucket like thing in the ceiling and fill it with water leaving a roof on it.

Here is what I discovered.

Solid objects (such as walls, rocks, and so on) fall and are process before liquid objects (like water).

So the bucket fell first, crashing into the lava tube and falling to the bottom (with one of my miners inside, no body to recover, oops).

THEN the water fell after the "bucket" was already destroyed and I got cave in spam as the water fell and hit the lava.

So much for my lava submarine idea. I dont think its going to work.

#We all live in a Lava Submarine,
  Lava Submarine,
  Lava Submarine...#
?

(Ok, so that miner died in it, but...)

edit: Probably does not match the story facts, but I decided to filk on the theme...

#In the fort where I was born,
Digged a dwarf to Lava Sea.
And he showed us to his mine,
 With a stone-type submarine.

#So he filled it up with pond,
Till the surf-ace could be seen.
And the dou-ble up blue waves,
 Filled our Lava Submarine.

#We all dig that Lava Submarine,
   Lava Submarine,
   Lava Submarine.
We all dig that Lava Submarine,
   Lava Submarine,
   Lava Submarine.

#And our friend, he went on board,
He's so Dwarven, and so more.
And the band begins to play

#We all dig that Lava Submarine,
   Lava Submarine,
   Lava Submarine.
We all dig that Lava Submarine,
   Lava Submarine,
   Lava Submarine.

[Attach that lever, Urist McAnick.  Attach that lever!]
 [Connected it, sir!]
[Clear the area! Clear the area!]
 [Aye, aye, sir, cleared!]
 [Pull it! Pull it!]

#As the sub began to fall (...began to fall)
Every dwarf there was (...Every dwarf there was) began to see (...began to see)
Splash of blue (...splash of blue) could now be seen (...now be seen)
But no Lava (...but no Lava) Submarine (Submarine, oh oh!)

#And so down went... our Lava Submarine
   Lava Submarine,
   Lava Submarine.
And he did dive in... our Lava Submarine
   Lava Submarine,
   Lava Submarine.
And then he died in... our Lava Submarine
   Lava Submarine,
   Lava Submarine.
Until he fried in... , our Lava Submarine
   Lava Submarine,
   Lava Submarine.

For the magma submarine, I think the only way to get it to work would involve pumping out most of the magma, building the sub (either via obsidianizing and digging, or building) and then letting the magma fill back in.

I just abandoned (everyone died to siege) a fort where I was trying to construct a spire in a volcano with cave-ins and obsidian. Crashing a big obsidian bucket full of water through several layers of floor below it (I had already been draining and filling the volcano with sucessive layers of obsidian, then mining it out) created a huge erratic (not all the pieces of the original structure where extruded in this way) spire that ran the whole z-height of the volcano, down to the molten rock. I plan on seeing if i can create a solid spire this way, and live in a volcano. The spot even has ravens circling above the volcano. :D
