Blacklight: Retribution
« on: July 11, 2012, 03:18:05 am »

So... I've noticed that there is always someone behind me.  Always.  I can turn on the x-ray vision, and see that there is not a single hostile on this entire half of the map.  It must be safe to reload my weapon.  Bam.  Hostile in my face.  WTFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUU..........

Blacklight Retribution is a free-to-play multiplayer shooter now available on Steam. You can customize your character using game points earned by playing matches or purchasing 'Zen' with reeel money. However, The stuff that matters (Weapons, equipment, armor) is easily bought using GP, so Zen doesn't give too much of an advantage.

I don't know if "easily" is a word I would use...

Eh, I usually end up with tons of GP after a few games. All my stuff is bought with it, at least.

It's not too bad.  You make between 150-200 GP in every 10 minute match.  It costs 5500 GP to gain permanent access to a weapon, which only takes a few hours of play to accumulate.  There are also much cheaper 1, 3, and 7 day purchases.  I've only been playing since Sunday morning, and I've perma-bought the burst-fire rifle and am working towards a helmet.  All the temporary item rewards for leveling up really help in the meantime.

Not only is the shooting good, but the marketing is what sold the game for me. The whole idea of renting weapons is very interesting, and keeps the balance between veterans and newbies quite well if you ask me.

The only quarrel I have with the game is that incendiary ammo is overpowered.

I really like the idea of the weapons unlock system. It lets them make money from the spoiled "pay to skip grind" types, allows you to try things out for fairly low cost, and lets you get them permanently for the equivalent of around an afternoon of gameplay. Seems balanced to me.

For the X-Ray vision thing, I usually do quick scans exclusively. Nothing beats a lot of quick scans compared to one long scan, and usually you can do a quick 360 and get an idea of where everyone's at.

The spawns are terribad in this game, though. I've lost count of how many times I've spawned right in front of an enemy, or that an enemy's spawned right behind me. Never seems to work in my favor, either.

PvP. I completely forgot there was PvE in this game.

Do you get GP in PvE games?

Nevermind, was thinking of a different game.

PVP or PVE?

PvP. Think COD: Future Warfare Multiplayer.

PVP or PVE?
The game is primarily a multiplayer arena FPS, however there are reports of the dev team planning a 'Horde' mode.

It would certainly provide a nice break from getting mowed down by hard suits and sub machine guns.

Decided to try it out today because it looks kinda like Dystopia, and I loved Dystopia. To be honest I think Dystopia's better, but I've played it to death already.

I played a few games, did pretty well, then the servers ran into some issues and I came back some hours later. Then I tried playing around with the combat rifle (semi-automatic shotgun), which is incidentally one of the worst shotguns I've ever played with, it does decent damage at point blank range, but the damage falls off very rapidly due to scatter unless you aim... which somehow reduces scatter. But if you aim you lose manoeuvrability, and you still do less damage than someone with the basic assault rifle.

It seems to be having a lot of server issues, as it went down again shortly after that.
