I mean... yes?  It matters if a company is tricking their supporters, but if the more cynical of us are correct, their intent is merely to grab some money and ship some hardware, not create a lasting brand.

This console could lead to an increase in the popularity open development. Possibly. Probably not, but it could happen.

I think the developers will stay to develop some games for the console, but the community will die pretty quickly.

It encourages those more console-oriented (and others) to get into open-source development, free-to-play games, and software development.
Bull. Shit. I fail to see how a system which doesn't come standard with a keyboard puts anyone any closer to 'software development.' Unless of course your idea of software development is this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cjCo2I3ooK0&feature=player_embedded
It has 1 USB port; which means even if you were to buy a mouse & keyboard separately for the system, you would need a USB hub too.

The other thing which really bugs me about this system is how it calls itself 'indie' focused. It's not, it's mobile focused. Indie does not mean 'low system requirements,' it just means it wasn't done by a big corporate studio. This is indie. This is indie. The reason many indie games have low system requirements is just as a result of having small amounts of content (textures, models, ect) due to not having hordes of artists and animators. However, and this is particularly true going into the future, that is not the only reason one uses a lot of system resources. Dwarf Fortress is a prime example of this; large-scale simulations and similar can be done to make really neat content on the fly in such a way as to be easy for a single or small group of developers to create. If anything, saying a poor-spec system like this one an 'indie' console looks down on indies as being unable to do really cool things with the latest technologies and techniques which make use of them.

This is a minority console. In no way will this thing be able to play AAA games and since it is opensource, I doubt big players will want to develop games for it.

It has been said but for a console like this to survive in today's market, you need the raw power of Nintendo.

Opensource console != forcing all games developed on it to be opensource.

A lot of it depends on how closely they follow the android environment, the keyboard/mouse availability (1 usb port? Why?) and if it gets some decent programming tools with it from the get-go.

I'm looking into developing for the android OS myself, but not necessarily for this platform. I can see it as an awesome thing for kids to get into the world of coding and games creation though. A C64 for today's world, or kiddy Linux for the masses. Whatever way you want to look at it, I think it is a pretty cool idea. If you're buying this to play AAA titles, you'll probably be dissapointed. But for a hobby coder it should be great, plus it will give you "reasonable" skills for the future if they can make it relatively easy to port to mobile/tablet environments.

If they had something like this when I was a kid, I'd be begging my parents for one. So much better than GWBASIC, QBASIC or TP6 on an old 286. Plus you can show your stuff off to your friends so much more easily than on a PC. Just take your console to your mate's house, plug it into their TV, and start playing (on controllers that all your friends will understand). I think it's a cool idea, for hobby coders, kids getting into coding, and even people like me who'll just be using it for old school games on a telly.

I'm getting one for the emulation possibilities. But I know I'm going to muck around in the SDK at least a bit. Boy I hope the slap another usb port on it before main release. Or I'll buy a hub I guess.

Also, who said this was open source only? It's a try-before-you-buy, a freemium, and even freeware platform. I haven't seen anything about stuff "needing" to be open source. It can be if you want to develop under the open source model, but it doesn't have to be AFAIK.

One hundred bucks to show my mates what a leet-uber-coder I am in between rounds of SF2 and a few beers? Yep, for sure

Just as a speculation and a thought. With the android OS being able to be rooted, there being a version of dosbox as well as virtual machine creators on android, and HDMI providing good video resolution, how soon do you think it will be after the release that people manage to get win95/98 (and maybe even XP) going on the OUYA?

I'm not exactly going to buy it because of that, but it would be a bit of a laugh. Slow, pointless, stupid, geeky fun. I've still got my copy of 95, 98 and XP laying around, and heaps of turn based games for them. It might not be my highest priority to use up my 8gb of storage on, but knowing that I'll be able to play solitaire, tetris, minesweeper and ski-free on my television would be cool.

I dont understand why the nature of the console being open source prevents larger dev studios from wanting to release games for it.

It's not the open-source.  It's the massive* market for the ouya: they're scared of it.

*- Where massive actually means microscopic.

If it were to act as a media hub for plugging my TV to the interwebs (like that google sphere thing) I wouldn't mind the idea. I tried the "smart" TV function that our new LG TV has, It even includes a remote control that can point and click at stuff like a wii, but given the TV's hardware has about as much processing power as a tapeworm, loading a simple youtube video is a painful and slow process.

Now an open-source console is just a bankrupt idea, what damn market are they aiming for?

I mean, if the android game scene is about as bad as the iOS market (and I beleive it probably is) you got like some half a dozen "good" games such as angry birds, and "good" there is a rather questionable adjective if you compare them with *ahem* real games, the niche games which make use of the touch-screen interface, and the overwhelming giant torrent of disturbingly fluffy and cute free games that just want to rip off money from you. I don't think paying $99 to play that kind of shit on TV is feasible.

I really want that one as a "when". I want "grubs", and "virgin woman" to turn into a dragon. and monkey children to suddenly sprout wings. And I want the Dwarven Mutant Academy to only gain their powers upon reaching puberty. I also have a whole host of odd creatures that only make sense if I divide them into children and adults.

Also, tadpoles.

They're teaming up with Onlive.  Pretty neat idea methinks.

Although as Onlive have said only most games they have have demos doesn't this already break the big promise of everything is at least tryable for free?

I do like the concept of onlive, but the only time I've tried it I found it much to laggy to be usable does anyone have other experiences with it?
