If money were no object, I'd suggest a dual xeon setup, 24 threads (2 per core).
Thats pure insane if you aren't planning to run a server/protein folding computer

Yea, I really don't think I need anything more than a quad core.

I've yet to see a game NEED more than a dual core cpu even at highest settings.

In fact I've yet to find a game that my dual-core AMD Athlon 64 X2 5600+ (2.8GHz) from 6 years ago won't run acceptably on max settings.

It seems recent R&D for games has all gone into things that need a lot of GPU power, and CPU stuff has stayed mostly the same...

It's not an embark so much as seven dwarves having a simultaneous strange mood and going off to build an artifact fortress that menaces with spikes of awesome and hanging rings of death.

My CPU is actually quoted exactly as being the "recommended" spec for Diablo 3. That's quite odd to see.

I know diablo wasn't intense on the cpu as SC2 was, SC2 drops tons of threads that people really need quad core for the full entertainment.
