CPU decision
« on: July 09, 2012, 02:07:22 pm »

I am going to build a new system soon and was wondering what the best choice will be. Best isn't necessarily most performance, or cheapest.

My primary choices:

Intel i7-3770K
LGA 1155 77w quad core (3.5Ghz - 3.9Ghz turbo) about $350 with medium priced motherboards.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116501

Intel i7-3820
LGA 2011 130w quad core (3.6Ghz - 3.8Ghz turbo) about $300 with high priced motherboards.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115229

AMD FX-4170 Zambezi
AM3+ 125w quad core (4.2 Ghz - 4.3Ghz turbo) about $140 with low priced motherboards.

Joke options added as poll because, why not?

What will you be doing on this computer: work, gaming, video editing?

Gaming mostly and any programming/development I do on my own time.

The I7-3770k has integrated graphics and thats the only reason why the cpu costs so much. the 3820 is such a better choice as you still got the quadcore HT unlocked cores but you got 40 PCIE lanes for lots of expansion room and thats why the motherboards cost so much. The amds, well i only suggest those if you are a broke bastard as those were even outstripped by the I5s

Have always wondered if intel still shipped a GPU-less part. SO the 3820 is a faster quad core than the 3770 and without the GPU?

Technically yes as you have more PCIE lanes to distribute for multiple gpu cards if you are rich enough. Other than that i made a mistake its a locked processor, theres a preset overclock you can hit but you can't overclock it, you need the K models for that.

Any i7 is pointless in gaming, Better with the i5 of same specs without HT and save a chunk of money.

HT only adds maybe 10-15% performance in apps IF they support more than 4 cores, Which most do not, and pretty much zero extra performance in games..  Save some cash and get a cooler running cpu that will overclock better.  Or put the saved $100-150 towards the gfx card, Will make a much bigger diference in gaming than a 10%(maybe) increase in cpu performance.

An i5 2500 k overclocked to 4GHZ will easily out perform any of those i7 listed in daily computing and gaming..

Well I'm building a new pc and I would recommend this cpu:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116504
Intel Core i5-3570K Ivy Bridge 3.4GHz (3.8GHz Turbo)
I don't know if thats fast enough for you but it has a pretty good bang for the buck. But I wouldn't trust me on that advice, this is my first build.

The new chips are really nice in bumping it up to the future with the faster Memory and PCIE 3.0 support but only thing on that chip that got the biggest boost was the integrated graphics. Sure the cpu got some bonus like burning less power but actually there has been reports of core temps having a noticeable jump when OCing compared to the old 2nd gen.

So i take it the instructions per cycle of these i7s are high enough compared to the Zambezi that a 16% faster clock doesn't make up nearly enough difference?

Well the Zambezi's are running on longer pipelines, think Pentium 4 ;)

Yup, thats why I said not to trust my advice. I don't know which parts are best yet.

I have one question. My case will be the Antec 1200. But with all coolers with that case and a noctua cooler (I'll edit this once I find the name of the cooler again.) Do you think I would have problems with my cpu's tempeture?

crap with that case loaded with fans and that type of cooler, you should be able to go 5Ghz without cracking over 50c

If money were no object, I'd suggest a dual xeon setup, 24 threads (2 per core).
