Ace Combat - go dance with the Razgriz!
« on: July 09, 2012, 01:48:22 am »

I've been going apeshit all over this recently. Seriously, picked up a new copy of Ace Combat 5, played it for two days straight, remembered just how much world building there is for a freaking arcade flight simulator, started playing the Japanese Ace Combat 3, realized that holy shit this looks like Ghost in the Shell and that my freaking wingmates have more character within the first mission than nearly every character in 4 GOD DAMN.

Sorry, just... wow. Huge surprise coming out of that. Should have expected some story after AC5, but AC3's story is already proving to be much better (less hippie peacenik fighter pilots--where the hell did they come up with that one?)

I loved all of them so far. Played 4 and 5 on the PS2, and loved the hell out of it. You made me nostalgia hard over it though. Too bad I don't have a PS2 anymore.

I personally always liked Zero the best. All your opponents get interviewed about their fights with you during the Belkan war. The execution was excellent as was the acting I think though it can still get hammy occasionally.

It seems like I'm the only person who didn't find the tunnel that hard. Certainly not as difficult as beating that squadron of Belkan aces, whatever their name was. I still haven't beaten that on anything past normal, and I've had the game six years.

But yeah, it's the only action game series I've played with a remotely interesting story. I actually got a little sad when

No, it's about 3/4ths of the way in. You don't have to fight them, but as I recall you get some special reward if you beat them. I think it's near the canyon mission. Been a while since I played though.

I guess I'm the only one here that's favorite was 4? Well, I guess not everyone loves Mobius 1.

Seriously, that's the only one where I remember the NPCs actually noticing that the player is more efficient than their entire air force.

Ace Combat 4 was definitely my favourite too.

Buggered if the disk didn't start failing, too.

Oh, you mean

Yeah, that one is pretty much impossible. Never even tried it on normal, and I've been playing on ace exclusively recently, so that's just a big no. (One missile shoots you down--makes not dying pretty much impossible against 8 planes all going after you)

Also, 4 is one of the most common favorites. The people in 3 take notice of you early on--while everyone thinks of Rena as the ace of SARF, Dision talks about you as SARF's ace by the third mission. In 5, your whole squadron gets all the fame--while the player certainly does more (I checked out my stats--over 1000 targets destroyed to the second most, Nagase's, which were... just over 30).

My Ace Combat 5 disc started failing, and I got a new copy recently, which is why I started binging. Now I'm playing the JPN Ace Combat 3 and man, like I said.

Ace Combat 5 and 6 are excellent games. 4 and Skies of Deception (PSP) were both also pretty good, but just don't match 5 and 6's story, characters, soundtrack, or mission design.

I've played both 5 and 0, but 0 is my favourite between the two -- for exactly the reasons that were brought up previously.

I used to be extremely good at both 4 and 5. Tore through the entirety of both on Ace. Those were fun times.

I've played both 5 and 0, but 0 is my favourite between the two -- for exactly the reasons that were brought up previously.
4 was awesome, have yet to play 5; Zero rocked big time (beat it on the knight path; I'm a goody 2-shoes merc), and I have yet to continue my game of 2 (had a livestream of it going on before; might continue it when I have a chance).

To tell the truth, this was my main reason to play Zero. I play that tune in my head everytime I'm about to do something utterly badass, or in a one-on-one against someone that outclasses me, and I have a chance to win; like a true ace.

Another reason I wanted to play Zero was also to go on an Ace vs. Ace marathon (unlockable after beating the game on all 3 paths of aces (Mercenary, Soldier, and Knight). Primarily, I want to gunkill Mobius-1, just to see if I have the skill/balls to. With an A-10 no less more (derp).

So yeah, me in a slow tank-buster vs. an unkillable badass ace in a freaking stealth fighter that can double my top speed and triple in acceleration and is a helluvalot more maeuverable than me and is beyond better-armed; and I intend to gunkill him like this. This is like me trying to punch out God to see if it's possible.
