Dragons dont have the [CHILD] tag so you can't breed them, unless you change "the files"

I don't think anybody else has mentioned this, so a warning: wild beasts that are tamed and then go feral won't be caught by traps. Also, I think they have to be able to access each other (in theory), so locking them in separate rooms might not work.

Other than that, good luck! This has always been a goal of my fortresses, to catch a breeding pair of dragons. I will be taking notes from this thread.

Some quick info - based on earlier experiments with tamed Rutherers, cage traps will work on a tamed animal that goes wild.  Also, animals don't need access to each other, they just have to be uncaged.  So separate rooms work fine (my dragoness is sitting on two eggs as we speak).  That being said, I've set up multiple layers of doors and obsidian bridges to seal the whole area off if things go horribly wrong.

Random side note, just got hit by a goblin ambush.  A bunch of goblin spearmen ambushed my miners outside.  My seven, legendary, armor-clad miners with steel picks.  Yeah, that ambush didn't last long.

I wander if a dragon-girl can go wild while sitting on the clutch, will animal trainer train her while she is on the clutch, will this break the hatching process, and what will be the status of the hatchlings, which were laid by tamed dragon, but hatched under the wild beast?

yes, they can go wild, yes they can be trained during, yes this can possibly cause the eggs not to hatch and as far as I'm aware a wild animal won't stay put on the eggs, so they won't hatch, making the last point inapplicable

It will break the hatching process because they yank the animal out to retrain them. Many a raven breeding program failed because of that.

Hrm, this might explain why the two eggs aren't hatching.  I'll have the dwarves cook them (Dragon Egg Omlettes!) and try again, with taming disabled for the dragoness - she's exceptionally trained, that should be plenty of time.

You appear to be under the mistaken impression that I value my dwarves more than I value my precious, precious dragons...

I've arranged to have the area sealed off at a moment's notice.  In an emergency, I intend to create a room with a retractable bridge floor directly over a room full of cage traps, then allow the dragons into that room to be recaptured.

You have to mod for dragon eggs to hatch - I have a draconic fort myself where i have constructed a temple to their supreme kind.

Here's thread, it contains useful information

I'd probably try breeding them by just walling the male away somewhere, it doesn't matter if he goes feral. Don't know if dragonfire affects constructions (probably not, since magma doesn't), so that should be pretty easy unless you get really unlucky. Or you can do what I'd do, and make a raising bridge and mechanisms to link it out of dragonfire-safe materials; easiest ones are probably nether-cap, only usable for the bridge, and dolomite/periclase for the mechanisms, or if those aren't available even by ordering from the caravan, adamantine. This allows you to seal the dragon inside, and it can't destroy the bridge. A line of cage traps along the only, winding (to limit LoS and dragonfire line of effect) exit. It seems you have most of the rest of the safety precautions pretty well worked out, and the dragonfire-safe materials aren't absolutely necessary, since a dragon won't flame if there's no target to do it at.

The real questions are: do they take any longer to hatch than say, domestic poultry? And it doesn't matter so much how long it takes a dragon to be fully grown, what matters is how long does it take to reach adolescent and be able to breed in turn (well, you can decide this when modding them to hatch)? In any case, once you have a couple of hatchlings, live up to the name of your fort, and have each entrance be covered by 1 or 2 dragon pillboxes. If you want, keep them constantly open behind fortifications, so all visitors will know that you don't mess about, when it comes to your name. I'm thinking of something like this:

Code: [Select]
  D
WWFWW
.....
.....
WWFWW
  D
Hopefully the only "friendly fire" casualties you'd get would be limited to whoever is passing through a relatively small portion of the corridor when the dragons fire on any kobolds they might notice. A small price to pay, for dragon-guarded entrances. For bonus points, make the fortifications out of clear glass. :P
