Throw the hammer at the bat. If it doesn't work, order it to strike the bat down.

I'm confused as well. Wasn't the pawprint where we descended down into the other side of the boulder?
And left of the pawprint was the engraving cave?
And I never suggested to go further up. I never even knew we could.
I heard we had to find the other red gemstone. So according to Urist's maps, which I mostly agreed with, there should be an unexplored area below the faced boulder? It's hard to tell how far the apparent slug carried us and how far down we fell. Or are the gemstones not for the faced statue?
If the hammer absolutely insists we carry on upwards, we... could... Umhhh... I don't know, seems our friend is quite content at climbing ledges. Toss the rope onto the next ledge and carry on? Maybe aim for the bat instead?
If all that fails, try and fit the red gemstone into the figurine's face.
If all that fails, and under no other condition, whisper to the hammer: "I know more than you think I do."

EDIT: Ninja's stealin' my 500th reply.

That went better than expected! See, it is now nice and docile. ;D

>Begin riding. Teach it to be an obedient mount.

>Lacking spurs, we will just have to pummel it with our heels to make it go faster.

>Oh, and between training techniques, ask it how it knows our name.

"Yeah, that's my name. Now, back up with you!
I've got to be somewhere..."

"Heh... little shaky maybe. Flap 'em harder, manbat!
So what's your name?"

[Manbat is shrieking]

why do we assume the manbats are our enemies? they were dwarven alies acording to the engravings we saw before, and we started the hostilities when we released the cage of crundles and took their side in the ensuing fight

Hang on...

>Have a "Oh carp!" moment.

This manbat knows our name! It wasn't attacking us! It's likely it knew us before, somehow. :-\ He's probably an old friend whom we just cracked in the face with our +7 bent mace of concussions.

>Land and ask again, a bit more nicely, how Mr Manbat knows our name.

>Don't remove the lasso just yet, though...

"Wait a minute... OH CARP!
... abort... ABORT!"

"How do I land this thing... ugh..."

"Alright... let's both calm down a little...
... and start over again... but no funny stuff, or it gets the mace again!"

"... so yeah... umm... I'm Koganurist.
Have we met before?"

"You don't remember, Koganurist?
It must have been ages...
... you haven't changed at all... except for that...
... my... head..."

Whoops.

Well, uh, we should untie the fellow and uh, be nice to make up for that minor error of judgement on the part of the community, and uh, try and find out more about stuff from him since, er, he won't hold any hard feelings at all. Probably.

* Yoink backs rather hastily out of Datan's consciousness for now, looking sheepish.
