Sci-Fi Giveaway! Claim your gifts!
« on: July 07, 2012, 10:34:41 pm »

I've had these items sitting in my Steam gift list for a while, so I figure I'll share the wealth :D
  • Gratuitous Space Battles: Best way I can describe this is an RTS without much in the way of direct strategy. You customize dozens of different ship hulls from four different races with a huge variety of weapons and modules, arrange them in whatever formations and groups you like, and send them up against an enemy fleet. Battles are controlled entirely by the AI, but you'll have a very pretty lightshow in the meantime. Best as I can tell, this does NOT come with any DLC.
  • Shattered Horizons: A multiplayer first-person shooter...in zero gravity. I have not played this much because it made me slightly dizzy, but you can indeed float through space or walk on any surface. Nicely atmospheric as well; if your suit loses power for some reason, you lose the ability to hear anything other than your footsteps and your own weapon (slightly muted).

Both of these games are on Steam. To enter, let me know which game you would like and include your favorite science-fiction franchise, writer, video game, whatever. I will be doing the drawing sometime tomorrow afternoon, using random.org. Sorry, but escaped lunatics (and I WILL be checking) are not allowed.

Good luck, everyone!

Game of choice: Gratuitous Space Battles.

My most favourite sci-fi franchise used to be Star Trek series as I grew up watching Captain Picard and the crew in the The Next Generation. 10 years or so later, I found Battlestar Galactica! While I like sci-fi in general, I prefer semi-realistic ones. I like the fact that mankind still used ballistic weapons and missiles and the lack of alien races in Battlestar Galactica , somehow it leads to deeper immersion.

I also have a hobby of reading (free) sci-fi books on my Kindle that I acquire from Amazon. I greatly enjoyed reading The Phoenix Conspiracy and In Her Name series.

Oh, why not?

Space Battles sounds ok!

Jack Vance! Or Alfred Bester. Or Ursula Le Guin.

Or all of them.

Shattered Horizon!

My favorite science fiction novel is called Space Plague written by George O. Smiths. Not the greatest book, and a bit short, but it brings back memories.

I'm in for shattered Horizons.

My fav scifi is Frank Herbert's Dune.

But since that is one you probably have already heard of, I will also recommend Neal Stephenson's "Anathem" aka science monks encounter and hoodwink realistic aliens and discuss Euclidean geometry.

As for scifi games, xcom, every alien trope you could possibly want rolled into a single game.

I'll toss in for Gratuitous Space Battles. You guys doing giveaways are awesome.

My favorite science fiction work is Battlefield Earth, written by L. Ron Hubbard. Read it when i was 8, and reread it several times because it was so fantastic.

EDIT: Why are so many people doing giveaways? Not that I'm complaining of course but I'm pretty sure there has been 4 or 5 in the last day or 2. Bay12 must be feeling wonderful and generous I suppose. You guys are so fantastic.

Throwing in for GSB like most everyone else :P

Favorite scifi is hard, though... while I've read a lot of actually published stuff, I don't tend to rank my writers to a heavier degree than 'good, readable, and not good'. And lately I've read more fanfiction than anything, so...

So. The three most recent writers I've read that are at least mostly scifi: Capn Chryssalid, who has done some X-Com crossovers and has a collaboration fic over a million words (under a different author name, Chryssalid Lathis), EarthScorpion, whose two Aeon fics are utterly delicious Cthulhutech/Neon Genesis Evangelion crossovers, and lastly Academia Nut, who has done some wonderful things with Eva and war hammer 40k. Fellow's also got a number of other fics hanging around places like the space battles forum, but those are a bit harder to find.

... and yes, I like "soft" scifi, stuff that borders on fantasy or crosses right over cheerfully whistling a tune. Like hard scifi, too, but it's harder finding good fan fiction that involves that :P

I've read my Asimov and etc, it's just been a while, heh.

Oh, I'd like to enter. Username is 'quinnri'. I'd like to enter for the Shattered Horizons game. (I am pretty sure I already have GSB..)
My favorite Sci-fi work is probably the original Tron, the remake of it was pretty good too, though.

Thanks for hosting!

I'm not entering, but I just want to thank you for doing this giveaway, the community has been really generous lately. :D

My favorite Sci-fi author though is Orson Scott Card, but not for Ender's Game. The books that I really love him for are the Shadow books.
