Fantasy Building games
« on: July 06, 2012, 10:30:07 pm »

Dwarf Fortress, Towns, Goblin camp, and Gnomoria.

You know them, the ones where you start with 7 odd guys and build a fortress/camp/town/whatever.

Most of them are very similar, ranging from the most complex game ever, to pretty casual.

These are the games I could think of off the top of my head.

What other games do you guys know that are like this?

Aurora.
That's not really what I mean.
That's a very complex 4X, not really a fantasy "city" builder.

I guess Wurm and Shores of Hazeron both fit under this category, but barely.

It's a very niche genre. The only other games I can think that's like it is Towns, although that's rather low fantasy. If you really want to push it there's stuff like Majesty, Age of Wonders or Terraria.

I suppose if you want city building games, some of the ones include Pharaoh, Caesar, Zeus (with the Atlantis expansion, Poseidon), and the Settlers series. Couldn't say what's good on the last one as far as versions, but I've heard decent things about it.

Cultures 1&2 (not sure if there are more of them) are pretty spot on for what you're looking for, similar to the early Settlers games, you start out with some vikings and a big longhouse, build housing, collect resources, construct farms, breweries, explore and defend from stuff and all that, quite fun, plus the stye was quite nice :)

Majesty 1 and 2.
Not nearly like DF but still fun... till you start doing missions from the expansion (majesty 1) or the hard ones (majesty 2).
Seriously if you manage to defeat the dragon or rat king without restarting the game at least 10 times then i salute you.

Alien Nations 1 and 2.
Simplified DF or Settlers with more complexity.

Enemy Nations.
Not really fantasy but it kinda fits. Several spacefaring races fight over the last uncolonized but habitable planet in the universe.
However instead of waging a huge pangalactic war over it they decide to send one ship filled with the most basic technology materials and manpower to build a city and wipe out other races.
It's kinda like Settlers meet Simcity meet Red Alert.

If Wurm has been mentioned Haven and Hearth should be too. I suppose it's even less fantasy than Wurm but really it's just a different sort of fantasy more akin to Unreal world.

I have the manual to the first one within sight. I was never any good at it unfortunately; I'd only realise something had gone wrong too late to fix it. I was pretty young when I last played it so perhaps it's time for another try.

Same thing here really, especially since my English wasn't as good back then, so it mostly came down to doing random stuff to see what works, then trying to replicate the results until you have a clear picture of what does what, how and why. It was still pretty fun to see your village grow over time, and the building animations were always kinda cute :)

regarding "start with a few units and build alot":
"anno" series and "settlers" series.
"the guild" series and "crusader kings 2" maybe too... atleast you start with 1 guy there and build a dynasty.
and the X series for space where you start with 1 ship and build a space empire.

regarding "fantasy town building" a bunch are named already like "majesty 2"

The graphics are pretty charming. The world seems really alive with most things animated.

There's Stronghold (1993), a fantasy kingdom building game based on D&D that can be played on DOSbox. It's a bit like majesty. Here's a link with a description: http://www.abandonia.com/en/games/642/Stronghold.html
