We'd never totally get rid of them. And the turrets would shoot anyone moving in front of it. Giving them the ability to turn around would make a dead zone around it.
Back to the turret. It's really freaking big.

7) genetic research ? Because we all want horribly mutated dog guards at the gates

Yes. At the moment, this will allow you to create tamable alien species. Not sure how far I'll take it. Probably a long way off yet.
Can I suggest you do let the player mess with the genes on their crew too? I remember playing Space Station 13, you could manipulate peoples' genome with a special machine. The genome was a long sequence of numbers which you could change. Different sets of 8 numbers represented alleles (which were randomized each game session), which I think were activated if the sum of all the numbers in that allele was in a certain range. There were alleles for super strength, laser vision and some other super power ones, but most of them were things like blindess, deafness, allergies, being a monkey (yes), etc as well as some which determined your skin, hair and eye color depending on what range they were in. You'd have to experiment to find the good alleles. There was also something like whenever you changed a number some random ones changed slightly so it was difficult to control the process completely. Given that you want to pay a lot of attention to the mental state of your crew I could see a similar system doing some pretty interesting things.

I will probably scale down the turret, its a bit larger than it should be and means the AI cant path find through tight corridors very well. There are other variations designed (but not modeled or coded) that will have different roles (nerve gas emitter, flame unit and a totally overkill CIWS).  Those will probably be smaller.

Yeah. I have some rough things noted down for gene therapy on the humans. Probably nothing that breaks too far from my vague realism. So things like the ability to survive longer outside without a suit or see better in the dark. Plenty of room for humorous stuff too... maybe have a crew member make himself irresistible to the opposite sex and the wrongness that would ensue. Again that's pretty far out as I'm still piecing together the research system.

Out of interest can we deal with Eldritch sort of of stuff ? So we could find artifacts or really deadly creatures which need to be kept in certain conditions at all times sort of like SCP, infact Simoroth you should go read SCP wiki i think you would find some excelent inspiration there for stuff for the game. Anyway but would we be able to research Eldritch sort of stuff and maybe sort work onto occult and evil stuff.

Dead space... Why would I want that shit? :P I found the monsters boring I'm talking about stuff from the brilliant H.P lovecraft and SCP :P

Nothing would beat finding a crystal to have it then summon a eldar thing or for it to be a link to Cthulhu who the proceeds to invade your settlers dream slowly turning them insane and making SCIENCE on loved ones and friends

It's crazy how many people or small team (such in clockwork empires) are trying to make DF-like games.  I think it's good, if it brings new people to these kind of games. But it would actually be bad if it spreads on many projets the same amount of money. Anyway, it's interesting.

What about this game is DF-like? Its a sci-fi colonization management game, while DF is an attempt at a full fantasy world simulation. About they only thing they have in common is that you dig, and there are people on the map.

And the minions (robots and colonists)have free will, and the concept is ''Losing is Fun!''. It's not DF but it's certainly quite compareable :)

Still, I'm really looking forward to this one!

I do have finding strange artifacts, monoliths and the like, and want them to have weird effects. Like driving people insane etc. But nothing overly Lovecraft I'm afraid.

The two creature designs I have at the moment are more like primordial earth creatures (fitting with the state of the planet). No dead space monsters or anything metaphysical.

Well, i wasn't clear. I wanted to say that I was impressed by the number of people/game which made a direct reference to DF in their main source of inspiration. (It's not me who told this, it's him)

I'm not too worried about thinning the amount of money to complex Sim games. They used to be 50% of the market in the 90's. Even if the market for them hasnt grown, its still big enough for every indie team to live like kings off.

Indeed, I don't think games as a market are a 0 sum game anyway. Especially with so many people trying new things every day.

Are we talking about things like Trilobites and Eurypterid? Or what about those, uh... damn it, can't find the name. The creature with the two mouth-tentacle grabbers. Whatever it's called.

EDIT: I found the name. The creatures are called Opabinia, and their tentacles were a cross between vacuum cleaner tubes and elephant trunks.

I think the same. And I hope we are not wrong.
