Crusader Kings

For game details:
Bay12 Forum Game Thread

It has taken me a while but I am finally prepared to start a CK2 LP.
I had great fun with my Let's Play Crusader Kings Deus Vult and seeing that it only recently was surpassed in views on the Play With Your Buddies board by Solifuge's LIVESTREAM (Serious Frivolity), despite being over a year dead and only having 389 replies, I am hopeful that this LP is even a fraction as well received...

This is my first time playing Sword of Islam. I am starting 15 September, 1066.
Difficulty is Normal.

Who am I this time?

Someone in Iberia...
A Catholic...
In Galicia...

Duke Nuno II of Portucale!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I am Nuno Mendes Vimaranes. Duke of Portucale, Marshal of Galacia, and heir to the Country of Braganca and barony of Viana do Castelo (Castle in Porto, the county where my own seat is located).
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I am a brilliant strategist; cruel but just, and proudly slothful.

I am married to Duchess Goncinha of Portucale. She is actually a lowborn Catholic of Iberian Portuguese culture (like me). She is one year my junior.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

We share a child, Countess Loba of Coimbra. She is a 16 year old honest, just, trusting but greedy skilled tactician. She is also heir to my Duchy.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
She is countess through marriage to my steward, Count Sisnando of Coimbra. He is a skilled fortune builder with all the right personality traits except he is a little too ambitious for my liking.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
They have a daughter, Elvira Sisnandes Davides. She is 8 months old. Ultimately she is lined up to be a pretender to my titles, but I am sure this will change soon.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

While I mentioned the seat of my duchy is located in Porto, I primarily reside in Corunna, Coruna where I serve as martial to my king, Garcia II of Galicia.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
My liege is one of three brothers, all of them kings in Iberia.

Just as I serve my liege in his court, several men serve me.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Vasco de Porto is my 49 year old chancellor. He is married to my paternal aunt, Gontroda Nunes. Vasco is excellent at his job but like my son-in-law he is entirely too ambitious.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Next we have Baron Lopo of Viana do Castelo, my marshal. He is a decent commander, known as a brilliant strategist and cavalry leader... but also known as a craven.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
His barony, Viana do Castelo, is located in Porto. As he is unmarried and without child I stand as heir to his holding. He is only 27 so I suspect he may find himself a blood heir soon enough.

My steward, Count Sisnando of Coimbra, I mentioned earlier. He is my son-in-law.

My spymaster is Count Egas of Castelo Branco. He is my 31 year old vassal and thankfully both skilled and not too ambitious. He comes from a very minor noble family. While without child yet he has plenty of years to produce one and has several eligible siblings to inherit his title.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Last but not least we have the Bishop Diogo of Braga, my court chaplain. The bishopric of Braga is located in Porto. Diogo is all that a bishop should be and more. He is rather paranoid and known to spend time in the dungeon inventing new ways to torture his enemies of God.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
We do not get along entirely well and he seems to pledge greater fealty to Pope Alexander II than to me.

In addition to the vassals already mentioned in my court two others swear fealty to me.
Count Fernao of Braganca rules the 4th county in my duchy. He is a decent man but known to be greedy.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And finally we have Mayor Soeiro of Guimaraes. A brat of 6 years old. His father died last year leaving him as mayor to the city.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Moving on...
The Duchy of Portucale follows Agnatic-Cognatic Primogeniture. That is why my daughter is lined up to inherit should I depart for God’s playground too early.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The Ducal laws for levies and taxes are all rather normal.
The Royal laws of Galicia differ in that the king’s titles are divided amongst his children, should he die, under Agnatic-Cognatic Gavelkind. At the moment my liege’s brother, King Sancho II of Castille is heir to the Kingdom of Galicia and his other brother King Alfonso VI of Leon is pretender. Their mother is next in line.
The kingdom has autonomous vassals and Papal Investiture.

My military is sufficient, but far from powerful.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I can raise several hundred men from my own demesne and a couple hundred more from my vassals. My king can raise nearly as many men as I can in totality in his county seat alone.
My worry is that the Muslims to the south may test our military strength before too long.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

A bit of perspective:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

September 15, 1066
My duchy sees a monthly profit of about 1.01 gold generated from my castle Porto and a city tax from Guimaraes.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The thing is, Guimaraes generates significantly more money than the meager 3.02 I see from it for that whelp Soeiro Mendes da Maia.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I believe that should change. Not only does that boy not deserve such a fine station, but his youth presents a danger to the stability of my duchy. Since I cannot revoke his title under the current crown laws I must take other steps to get my fair share of his incomes.
I will propose to raise the city taxation from 25% to 35%.

September 18, 1066
And it seems not many of my vassals think that is a great idea... support for the change is low. Well, let me rephrase that: I am the only one supporting the change.
I will let the proposed tax change remain on the table for some time. Maybe I can convince some vassals to change their opinions in due time.
But for now I have been ordered by the king to help train troops in Coruna.

October 9, 1066
Ahah! A change in crown authority...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
While this does negatively affect me as subject to the king, it also helps me... Now I can take even greater steps towards getting my fair share of Guimaraes’s taxes and secure the city from the unstable rule of a 6 year old child. I can revoke the boy mayor’s title.

First I send notive that I am canceling my request to change city taxation laws.
Next I demand what is rightfully mine...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

October 16, 1066
Excellent, the boy was no idiot.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
My monthly income has jumped to a cool 2.4 gold.

November 28, 1066
To follow through with my concerns of security of the city Guimaraes I am ordering a town palisade to be built. That whelp probably would have left the people unprotected.

December 8, 1066
It seems my liege’s familial relations have brought us into a war.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
So far there has been one battle fought in Zaragoza; a victory for Catholicism.

December 15, 1066
My liege has raised my troops in Porto. No lords of significance are leading the men (I remain training troops in Coruna) but Count Fernao and Mayor Egas are leading troops out of Braganca and mayors out of Coimbra and Castelo Branco are marching off to war. May God protect them all and bring them home safely.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

January 17, 1067
My son-in-law has done his job well!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
A 14.72 gold influx is nothing to downplay. Hopefully I’ll see more loyal displays out of him...

February 23, 1067
Fate smiles upon me, my wife is pregnant! May God bless me with a son. The way things are going I will be glad to have a strong martial son to help protect my duchy. Like I predicted the Muslims to the south are causing trouble. The Aftasid dynasty directly south of my duchy are involved in the Holy war for Aragon. While I am not personally at war I may see some of this conflict first hand if things get out of control.

May 15, 1067
The war is going well, it seems. King Antso IV of Navarra has occupied the entirety of Zaragoza. A couple of minor battle victories and single significant victory at the Battle of Caspe have brought this war firmly into our favor. Praise be to our God.
On a side note, I have made my son-in-law, Count Sisnando of Coimbra my master of the horse.

September 13, 1067
Well, the war has taken a turn against us God fearing Christians.
King Sancho II of Castille was killed in battle against Emir Ali I of Amirid Emirate. He was 31.
King Garcia II of Galicia inherited the county Soria some distance to the east. King Alfonso VI of Leon inherited most of the remaining titles, taking King Alfonso VI of Castille as his primary title.
The political dynamic has changed significantly witht he merging of the kingdoms Leon and Castille.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

September 22, 1067
King Alfonso VI is quick to adjust Castille to his rule. He has instituted high crown authority. I hope his brother, my king, doesn’t get too many ideas from him.

September 25, 1067
God has provided me with a daughter. She will be named Paula.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

October 24, 1067
Just a few days following after a massive loss at the Battle of Alagon the Muslims have given up. The Navarrese Holy War for Aragon has ended with King Antso IV of Aragon as victor!

December 2, 1067
Peace is short lived. My liege has declared the Galician Holy War for Aragon on Sheikh Muhammad Calatayud.
With the hopes that the other infedels stay out of this, the war may be short. King Garcia II has the Sheikhdom of Calatayud outnumbered significantly...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

December 24, 1067
Yesterday my King raised troops out of my duchy and today, on Christmas Eve nonetheless, the Emir Ali I of Amirid Emirate has joined the war for the enemy. Vasco, my chancellor, reports the Emir may be capable of bringing an additional fifteen hundred troops to the battlefield.

December 26, 1067
Horrible news has reached my ears.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Count Egas has informed me that my son-in-law Sisnando, my vassal count, steward, and master of the horse has been plotting against me. He wants my duchy.
After all I have done for him; letting him marry my daughter and heir, making him my steward, and granting him the honor of being my master of the horse!
How dare he disrespect me like that... Now I must imprison him.
With him locked safely away in my dungeon I have need for a new steward...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
My uncle will do. He is nearly as talented and the best part is that he is not only not ambitious, but he is content! Unfortunately he is a little older at 47 years of age. Several months ago it came to my attention that he desired a wife but I put off the thought quickly. Now that he is serving in my court I may need to find him a suitable bride... Then again maybe not. My paternal uncle has a strong claim on my ducal title. Should he spawn an heir that claim will pass on. I think I’ll leave Muno Nunes Vimaranes single for the time being.

(Please call out any mis-linked images. Unlike my last game, I will probably be playing this a little more 'live'; meaning I'll update as I play as opposed to having years played out ahead of each update... as such I'll be more able to respond to feedback or advice.)

Nice to see you back.  I could have sworn I've played this dynasty before...

Anyway, this looks awesome, the writing is good, I've watched "El Cid" so I'm looking forward to a Spanish LP.

Execute your son-in-law, and make your daughter marry someone matrinellally.  Your ruler is an old fart, so his chance of having more children is less and chance of dying is more.  Oh, and kill your granddaughter.

Sometimes, this game is quite brutal.  Killing a little girl just because she has her daddy's name and not her mommy's name.  But that is how the game works.

Execute your son-in-law,

Considering it. But I don't think I can do it without emotional issue rising from my other peeps though... and that may cause problems. His ambition made him pretty hard to tame in the first place, but when I revoked that kid mayor's title it pushed him (and most of my vassals) over the edge. I actually had a something like 3% revolt risk from my son-in-law for a hot minute until I gave him the Master of Horse title.

Problem is he is my daughter's husband... and I do hold some level of sanctity of familial relation, irrational or not. But at the same time he is dangerous. Ambition is a dangerous trait in a vassal. He is also pretty skillful. While my uncle suits well for now, he is likely to kick it sooner than later and I don't think I have another skill in court above 9:-/ But I am not sure why I even fret over that, my son-in-law will never serve in my council again. I’m not that stupid (I like to tell myself).

But to execute him… is that really really necessary? I don’t mind having people sitting in jail…

and make your daughter marry someone matrinellally.

That would be a benefit of killing him… I can remarry my daughter off. I could marry her to the count of Braganca, Count Fernao. That would bring the county into the fold in a generation if my daughter remains my primary heir.

All this sounds nice except…. I don’t think I can marry my daughter off again. She lives in Coimbra with Count Stupid Sisnando and I am pretty sure she would stay there with their daughter should he die.

Your ruler is an old fart, so his chance of having more children is less and chance of dying is more.

Old fart? I’m 34! (or 35?).  My wife is still in her fertile years, too. I have faith I’ll see a nice son soon enough… … …

Oh, and kill your granddaughter.

Sometimes, this game is quite brutal.  Killing a little girl just because she has her daddy's name and not her mommy's name.  But that is how the game works.

That seems a bit dangerous to me right now. While I have two daughters that can inherit, one is not like to produce more children anytime soon because her husband is locked away in my dungeon, and the other is 3 months old. I think I’ll keep the granddaughter around to act as a safety net. She also likes me right now (something like +20 relation) making her pretty much the only person in Portucale that does… I’d like to ride that high as long as possible before she gets old enough to hate me like the rest of them.

I am also cautious of putting myself in any vulnerable positions for a bit yet; Spain is a dangerous place right now. I fear this little war my king initiated may escalate. With the Amirid Emirate throwing in with the Calatayud’s the troop counts are much closer to even. My king still has the edge but lady luck can be a real bitch.

And should even just one more small Sheikh join in it could push the favor to the enemy. I am afraid that one of the more powerful Emir’s will join, though… that could bring doom to us… unless Castille jumps in… which still doesn’t assure anything other than prolonged war.

Depending on the next couple of days or weeks I may raise my own levies to go and help stomp the enemy now before things have a chance to escalate… Since I am safely occupied training troops for my King I am not afraid of getting injured, killed, or captured. But then again raising my levies will cut my income which I’d like to keep high in order to get a 75 gold emergency mercenary fund going…

Of course I can just hope for the best: my wife gets knocked up again, with a son; my king wins a medium sized war and grants lands to me; and my son-in-law dies a painful, but natural death… at the hands of my impaler bishop. (It is still natural if no artificial colors are used in the poisons, right?)

NO.  Your granddaughter DOESN'T have your last name, therefore your dynasty will DIE if she inherits.  Same with any other children from your daughter currently.

But yeah, your guy looked old, so I jumped to the conclusion that you were old.  At 34 years old, best not to kill your son-in-law, as that is a decision you'll likely have to live with for 20-30 years, and your chances of producing a son are good.  How old is your wife?  Now, she MUST die if you don't get a son by the time she reaches 45.  Henry VIII, eat your heart out.

Hey, if your lucky, your son-in-law will die on his own in jail.  I'm pretty sure characters in jail don't live as long as characters not in jail.

1068
The duchy remains intact and strong. Mayors from Coimbra and Castelo Branco and Count Fernao of Braganca are leading troops to meet with King Garcia II’s main host. No noble of significance is leading the troops he raised out of Porto. I remain in Coruna, training troops for my liege.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

On the home front the small city wall around Guimaraes is about 120 days from completion, all of my vassals with the exception of Count Fernao dislike me, and my son-in-law remains in the dungeon.
On the plus side my income sits at 2.13 gold monthly and I have a balance of 65 gold. I hope to save up to 75 gold and keep it in constant reserve as an emergency mercenary fund.

January 8, 1068
The war escalates. My liege lord’s Queen wife, who happens to be the queen of Aragon, has joined the war.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Her joining the conflict potentially brings an additional 650 troops to our side.

January 10, 1068
Just as I have feared, the snowball is growing...
Emir Abu-Bakr I of Aftasid Emirate, the Emirate directly to my south, has joined for the Muslims. As has Sheikh Abu-al-Malik of Albarracin.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Between the Aftasids, Amirids, Albarracins and Calatayuds the Muslims can bring around 4300 men against us. My King and his wife can raise under 3000 men...
I am more thankful than ever to be off the battlefield... This conflict is far from over.

January 12, 1068
King Antso IV of Navarra has accepted King Garcia II’s call to arms. He brings an additional fifteen hundred men to our side. Troop numbers are now much closer to even.

January 19, 1068
A killer blow to the Muslims. King Alfonso VI of Castille has joined the conflict. He can raise just under 4000 men by himself. With the exception of the Duchy of Barelona, ever independent Christian realm in Iberia have joined the war.

January 26, 1068
Emir an-Nasir I of Hammadid Emirate have joined with the Muslims. His Emirate is located in North Africa. He will need to cross the Mediterranean with troops if he wishes to contribute to his side, but even so he can bring around 3000 men to the field of battle.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

February 21, 1068
More and more Muslims are joining against us.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Almost all of Iberia is locked in war, now. To make things rather troublesome Countess Urraca of Zamora has declared war against her brother for the kingdom of Castille. Now King Alfonso VI must waste time addressing her rebellion instead of fighting the Muslims.

March 25, 1068
Castille is erupting into civil strife. Count Pedro of Valladolid and Count Muno of Asturias de Santillana have joined Countess Urraca in her war for Castille. If that wasn’t bad enough, Castelo Branco is under siege by fifteen hundred troops from the Aftasid Emirate. Count Egas is anxious to see the siege broken but thankful to be in Porto serving as my spymaster rather stuck in his castle facing the attackers...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I can only raise around one thousand troops; not enough to break the siege. Hopefully my liege will consider aiding me.

May 1, 1068
The small city wall has been completed in Guimaraes. I am afraid it will see a use before too long. My coffers hold around 74 gold. Just shy of my desired 75 reserve. In another couple months I will be able to raise an emergency regiment of mercenaries.  If Castelo Branco can hold out, perhaps I will be able to use mercenaries to break the siege.

May 10, 1068
It is time I buy myself some security.
The war situation is not ideal. While I am not at war personally, my security is directly tied to that of my liege and my liege is not proving himself in my eyes.
I could attempt to depose my liege or even declare independence, but those are rather rash moves and Garcia II does have almost twenty-five hundred men marching around in Castille. They could easily move west and crush me. Let us also not forget the fifteen hundred Muslims camped outside of Castelo Branco’s castle.
I do not think war is a necessary or wise step at the moment, but I can prepare myself for the future with a single man.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Nuno Alfonsez de Amaya is that man. He is uncle to the King and holds strong claims on Galicia, Castille, and Leon. Count Egas my spymaster has informed me that he may be willing to come to my court, too.
I will send an invitation to him immediately.

May 21, 1068
Excellent. Nuno Alfonsez has come to Porto.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
He will be a great tool should I need to prompt regime change in Galicia.

August 29, 1068
There is both good news and bad news; The good news is that Countess Urraca of Zamora sits safely in a dungeon and her rebellion is over. King Alfonso VI will be able to devote the full power of Castille against the Muslims.
The bad news is that the first battle has been decided.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
King Antso IV managed to lose against Emir Yahya I despite having a numerical advantage at the battle of Almazan. King Garcia II, my king, participated in the battle but Antso IV held the main command. I have not heard word yet, but I am certain men from my counties that marched off with the king have suffered casualties.
Garcia II and Antso IV have both lost much of their forces while the Muslims have significantly more men left with others nearby.

October 16, 1068
I have dispatched Vasco de Porto to Badajoz to improve relations with the Aftasids.

November 2, 1068
Things do not look great for King Garcia II. His forces in Albarracin are surrounded by a superior enemy and Castille does not seem to be doing much of anything to help in the war.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Our side have lost every battle fought and are extremely outnumbered. It is apparent that Garcia II cannot make wise decisions for the Kingdom of Galicia.
It is time to bring Galicia out of Jimena dynasty.
I will make Nuno Alfonsez King of Galicia.
First step: Resign from Garcia II’s council.
Next step... Declare war.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
And finally... march on Santiago
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
On the plus side, declaring war on the King has effectively ended the Muslim siege of Castelo Branco. Now those fifteen hundred troops will hopefully go harass my new enemy and keep him off my back while I tidy things up a bit.

February 1, 1069
Maintaining the siege of Santiago has been rather uneventful.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I even brought my wife north with me. And we have not been idle:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
May God bless me with a son.

April 16, 1069
Reports are coming in that King Garcia II is marching toward Braganca with around 500 men.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
For now I will maintain my position in Santiago. Should he manage to capture any holdings I’ll take care of his force later. I always have the option of hiring mercenaries, should it come to that.

April 26, 1069
Curses! Count Egas passed away. Castelo Branco has been passed on to his daughter, Countess Gontroda Egases de Sousa. She is only 8 months old...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I am also now in need of a new spy master. I will give Count Fernao of Braganca the position.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

May 22, 1069
King Garcia II has managed to con his relatives into merging their troops into his small army. There are now over one thousand men sieging Porto.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

May 24, 1069
And now my uncle is complaining that he is without wife.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
While he is serving me well as steward in place of my good for nothing son-in-law, I am afraid that if he finds a wife he will spawn an heir who will then be in position to challenge my authority.
I am forced to promise him I will find someone suitable for I fear pissing him off as I have no suitable replacement stewards.

August 14, 1069
Excellent! On August 8 Garcia II signed a truce with the Sheikh Muhammad of Calatayud, admitting defeat. As a result King Antso IV and King Alfonso VI have recalled their levies leaving Garcia II with a mere 200 men in Porto.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

September 3, 1069
Another daughter. Guiomar.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

September 23, 1069
Victory at Santiago! We have taken the castle!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
But I have also received some other interesting news.
Emir Abbad I has declared a Holy War for Galicia.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

October 3, 1069
ut oh.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Garcia II has brought his sister into the war. This is how the snowball started the last time around. I fear that Castille and Navarra may be next.

December 11, 1069
Hah! The Muslims have landed twenty-seven hundred men in Coruna.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
While they are hostile to me due to their war against Garcia II, my nominal liege,I am glad to see them. If they can bring down Coruna while I finish up Santiago I may be able to bring this war to an end quickly which will in turn end my hostilities with the Abbadid Emirate.

(Ummm, I just realized I forgot to de-quality-ize the images... some are, well, rather large. Sorry. I'll try to remember to batch 'em later.)

Ambitions play.  I'm curious to see how it ends.

Fun things to do in CK 2:
1) Bring claimants into your court, then force them to marry your daughters matrilineally.  Then you put them on their precious throne that your family gains when they die.  Although they usually might not, they can't refuse if they're in your court!  Even betrothals work, as I've never seen the AI break a betrothal.

2) Got a relative that wants to get married?  Why not marry them to an old crone!  They can't have children, and they stop complaining about not having a wife.  But remember, any fertility modifier allows a woman to have children past ordinary child bearing age.  So, while you would usually be looking for a celebate woman, in this case the celebatecy trait would actually allow the woman to have a child when she ordinarily would not.

I've played this game long enough to learn how to be a real William.

1070

May 6, 1070
It took many months but Pontevedra castle finally fell to my siege.

We have moved our host to the Bishopric of Tuy. Bishop Enrique of Tuy holds these lands for now. Hopefully within a month or two they will be firmly under my control.
The siege of Corunna continues; the Muslim host outside the city walls now numbers just over 3000. While their siege benefits me, I am still weary that they may march south on me before the job is done.

July 7, 1070
Tuy has fallen. The siege only lasted two months and a day.Now only the city of Vigo stands against us in Santiago.

Recently I have been feeling under the weather. I cannot be sure how serious my illness is while I remain in the field. hopefully once I finish up this siege I can return home for some rest.

August 21, 1070
The Abbadid’s have taken Corunna Castle. Reports also indicate they are not waiting to starve out the City of Lugo and are storming the town palisade.

Muno is upset that I have not followed through on my promise to see him married.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I truly intended to make good on my word, but then the war and illness caught up with me and the memory got lost. He has his eyes set on a young maid of 20 named Beatriz de Arcos de Valdevez, an attractive grey eminence.
She would make a great prize wife, surely, but I am honestly concerned that Muno may produce an heir capable of challenging me when I am in my elder years once he comes of age.
I am forced to push him off once again.. I will claim I have not found anyone suitable for his position and that young Beatriz is from too minor a noble line for our proud family...

September 20, 1070
Scouts report the Abbadid host is on the move south. They stormed the walls of Mondonedo church, finalizing their grasp of the county Coruna.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
My small (in comparison) force is still encamped outside of Vigo. We figure the Muslims should arrive in Santiago in about 20 days. I am not sure if that gives me time to escape south or not... I can remain in place and hope to finish the siege and secure a peace with Garcia II, flee south now, or storm Vigo’s defenses to expedite the capture...
Oh dear... I am stuck between a city and a Muslim horde...
Time to take a gamble. I will instruct my men to ready for an assualt...

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
We took Vigo. It was a bloody affair. Something like 230 casualties, but the city is ours.
Scouts say the Muslims are only about 13 days away, though. It would take 16 days for me to escape to Porto. To make things worse, Garcia II is still not open to surrender (despite the fact he is fugitive in his own lands!)
After long hours of deliberation with my vassals and other commanding lords we have agreed that to face the Muslims would be near suicide. Our 600 men stand no chance against their twenty-one hundred. Since we can not easily outrun or out fight the Muslims as a standing army I will order the army to scatter. My vassals and I should be able to make a quick escape back to Porto. My men may not be so lucky, but they are probably better off fleeing on their own than staying to be slaughtered.

October 8, 1070
Many of my men and I arrived safely home. Many others deserted or got lost or killed. I am just happy to be in Porto and no longer in Santiago. The Abbadid’s arrived there today and are sieging the capital castle. May God have mercy on the 400 plus loyal defenders... The Muslims have over twenty-one hundred men.

Today I woke feeling alive once again. Perhaps it is being home, in mine own bed, that has brought my health back to me; whatever the reason, I am feeling fine.

December 2, 1070
An interesting, dynamic situation is playing out to the north. Garcia II’s wife, Queen Urraca I of Aragon, has sent the mayor of Huesca with 400 men to help in his war. Reports place them in Astorga with a destination of Coruna. It is in Coruna that they will likely join a force of about one thousand lead by Mayor Aurelio from Navarra. Antso IV, King of Navarra is no enemy of mine but he can still work to capture back lands originally taken by the Abbadids; effectively decreasing the pain Garcia II is suffering.

Me, today:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

January 1, 1071
The siege of Santiago continues. Reports say the garrison is still holding out but it is doubtful they will last much more than another 6 months.
That castle is like to change hands many and more times in the next couple of years...

March 6, 1071
Two hundred men from the Aftasid Emirate are marching through Coimbra. My daughter sent word of them partially as warning that they were enroute to Porto but I suspect her message was more so intended to draw my attention to root them out should they decide to stay and siege her.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
My chancellor, Vasco de Porto, suspects that they will continue on past Porto to reinforce the siege of Santiago. Count Fernao has no information of any plots in Porto that may involve the enemy, which is good news, I suppose.
I put The Count of Branganca to work uncovering plots sometime in January. I am worried that some of my vassals may decide to act against me; specifically my marshal Lopo, the Baron of Viana do Castelo, and my Court Chaplain Diogo, the Bishop of Braga.
I am deeply concerned that two of my council members are known to have negative opinions of me. At least Count Fernao is loyal to me... or so I hope... now that I think of it much of my knowledge of vassal loyalty comes from his mouth...

But I must put my trust into someone;

March 20, 1071
The Aftasid’s are in the county of Porto and showing no signs of slowing down. Vasco de Porto seems to have been correct; the Muslims are continuing on to Santiago. As it stands I am off the hook... for now.
But those two hundred men, while minor now, will only add to the power presented against Garcia II, and ultimately my plans. I am not looking to see the Kingdom of Galicia fall, simply for it to experience a regime change. If the Muslims win they may destroy the Kingdom, if not me!
I’ve met with Baron Lopo and we have decided to intercept the 200 men before they get out of Porto. Lopo says we can raise 600 men in Porto, enough to put a major dent in the Muslim’s numbers.

April 4, 1071
We battled the enemy and won.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
To my dismay we lost 73 men to the enemy’s 130, despite our numerical advantages. I lead the middle flank with a minor lord on my left and some veteran soldier on the right. I would have liked to see a better battle result but a win is a win; I shall not complain more.

I received word from my daughter again; indicating there are an additional 100 or so men near the Lisboa-Coimbra border. It has been some time since I have visited my daughter. I will march my force of 540 south into Coimbra with the hope of playing a game of interdiction with the enemy.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

April 26, 1071
The enemy must have gotten word of my approach. They turned back and returned deeper into Lisboa.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
My outriders say there are around 120 more of the enemy in nearby Evora, headed for Lisboa, presumably to join the with first one hundred. I will stay put in Coimbra for now. Should I see an opportunity to strike effectively I hold no fear of travelling further south.

May 16, 1071
The Aftasids to the south have joined and are currently in Evora, apparently headed north into the county Castelo Branco. If things go according to plan, I can actually intercept them in Evora before they manage to get far into my land.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

June 12, 1071
Curses! We have been engaging the enemy in Evora for many days now; but the enemy keeps getting minor reinforcements from nearby counties. Just today a new host arrived putting the numerical advantage to the enemy! My men are getting beaten, battered and I fear they will soon be bested.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I am sending riders north to have COimbra and Castelo branco raise their levies to come to my aid... unfortunately I doubt they will make it here in time...

June 26, 1071
We were ultimately defeated at the Battle of Portalegre...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
We suffered 250 casualties and only managed to strike down around half that of the enemy.
I am retreating to Castelo Branco with what is left of my force. I sent riders to instruct Mayor Pero and Mayor Hermigio to be waiting in Castelo Branco for my arrival.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I have also received word that my son-in-law died five days ago.
