If a conditional isn't made, i'll roll a d2 and rule the attacker as the best of 5 winner on those rolls.

Why would you? Rolling a single d2 rather then 5 has the exact same succes chances, and is less complicated.

If it's the equivalent of flipping a coin and you're choosing whoever gets the most (heads or tails), you might as well just flip it once.  If it's totting up the scores I guess you could do it that way, but again you might as well just flip a coin.

The combat system averages 5d100 instead of rolling 1d100 because that creates a Normal distribution, making the slight advantages of having higher stats more meaningful.  With a Normal distribution, an attack vs defence advantage of +8 is much more significant than 8% (the advantage on a flat line rather than a bell curve).

Really there's no good option. It's getting to the point i'll just say screw the conditional and force players to pick a side - attack or defence
