I almost feel at this point it would be easier to build the bloody forges way down by the magma, and just use my minecarts to haul the bars, gear, and dwarfs up and down...

It's what I did at one point when I found the closest lava to be about 80z levels down. And then the caverns got in the way of a pump stack, so I just cut a hole straight to the sea and bult me a magma forge area.
