Oh, I had totally forgotten about Gearhead - that series is pretty darn good :)

I rather violently disliked Dungeons of Dredmore. Too simple, too slow, too boring... most of these stem from it not giving you any meaningful tactical decisions most of the time. I tried ToME a couple of times and found it to be rather bland and grindy, but oh well.

Hmm...

1 - Caves of Qud - Special mutations, a wealth of different weapon choices and ways to play, tons of cool creatures, just all around awesome.
2 - Spelunky - If you consider it a roguelike, that is. Fun platforming action, simple, yet complex, and it certainly kills you enough to be considered a roguelike.
3- IVAN - Insanely random, and the limb system makes it especially hilarious when you're trying to bite someone to death because you have no arms and one leg. If it there were more interesting creatures and items, it would probably take first place.

Thanks for all the responses everybody!
A lot of interesting roguelikes I haven't even heard of, gotta play' em all!
Specifically Incursion, IVAN, and Vapors of Insanity, those 3 sounds particularly interesting, I'll definitely be putting some hours into each of those soon.

I absolutely agree with you about Dungeons of Dredmor, I bought that game when it came out but it's just too "point and clicky" for me. I like the humor and art, but it just doesn't have that intense feel to it.

Dungeons of Dredmor is more of a casual roguelike experience. The focus, for me, is on collecting what you find and experimenting with all of the weird combinations you can make. Definitely a very different feel than "standard roguelikes". Which is why I forget that it's a roguelike.

1. Nethack
2. Cataclysm
3. Elona

EX

1. ToME
2. DoomRL
3. Infra Arcana
4. Lufia II (Ancient Cave)
5. Dungeons of Dredmor

And of course, Dwarf Fortress, albeit I don't consider it a roguelike for having a main mode that's tactical like a city-building sim.

I feel a lil' bit nerdy, because I've already decided if I like 99% of the roguelikes posted here.
Top three, atleast right now,
- Cataclysm
- Space Station 13 (if you think it's a roguelike, it is pretty complex and deep, and I think it's the closest thing to living in space, and a multiplayer roguelike)
- Dungeons of Dredmor (I play it casually, and don't take it seriously, I understand how it's not really complex, but I enjoy it)

1. NetHack - My 1st roguelike. Winning it felt great!
2. Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup - The only game I've beaten 30+ times.
3. DoomRL - Feels like Doom. It's great!
4. Dungeons of Dredmore - Funny and short.
5. ToME4 - Fun character development with lots of silliness (Rat liches and berserker plants). I don't think of it as roguelike for some reason.

I'd like to throw in an honorable mention to UnReal world. Basically a roguelike survivor set in the iron age. Really good roguelike.

4. Dungeons of Dredmore - Funny and short.
What do you consider short? Because I've put about 40 hours into that game, and have only managed to get to the 4th floor.

I'm a big fan of InfraArcana (lovecraftian RL) because there is a real sense of urgency. In most RL's you can poke around to your hearts content, limited only by food. The sanity system in IA really changes that.

Honorable mentions go to prospector, incursion, desktop dungeons, cataclysm, doomrl and x@com.

1. DoomRL - It's managed to recreate the Doom experience with nothing more than ascii characters and sound effects
2. Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup - It's the standard against which all other roguelikes should be judged
3. Elona - It's unbalanced, incomplete, glitchy, and often repetitive, but there's absolutely nothing else like it

Unreal World is probably my #1 favorite. Its in my top 10 favorite games

Gnomoria is my #2 favorite right now...even if it is early stages. It can improve a lot

Dwarf Fortress is #3, it introduced me to rogue-likes
