Any mod to make text easier to read?
« on: July 04, 2012, 03:06:04 pm »

Hi all,
I'm new to DF and I've downloaded the Lazy Newb Pack. I'm enjoying the game so far except that I'm having trouble reading the text. I'm not really sure what the problem is but I'm thinking the contrast between the black background and the white fonts is hurting my eyes.
I tried changing the color themes to a few suggested in the wiki website but it's not helping much. I also tried changing the RGB black values to a dark grey, and even though it did change the background color, it "created" some borders with fill color around the menu items.
Not sure it matters but I'm using the tileset that comes with the Lazy Newb pack.

English isn't my first language, so I should say that I'm a bit confused by the all the terminology, and I apologize if I'm not clear.
I'd like to know if there's some font mod available so I could change the font color or fontsize and the background color, if not, is it possible to do and can you provide a link that explains how to do that? (in a for dummies way).
Thanks.

ps: I've also noticed (when I read the dwarves description) that a few random letters have some grey-coloured squares behind them, but it makes the game even more difficult to read, is that normal?

I think part of the problem might be the tileset you're using. See if switching to ASCII or a different tileset helps. Or maybe turn on TrueType.

I switched the tileset and turned on TrueType like you suggested. It does help a bit (although the black/white contrast is still an issue) however I've noticed that TrueType doesn't seem to work in the in the Dwarf description text. The regular font is still showing up. If I click F12 (on the Dwarf Description panel) only the title font changes.Any ideas?
Thanks for the suggestions btw :)

Try the "Jolly bastion" tileset, for example:

Thanks guys, I used a mix of Ironhand graphics and fonts  and the colour theme from Jolly Bastion tileset. A lot easier on my sight.
