You have to install Smart Moving as a jar mod. I don't think it would work via the mods folder.

Oh, yeah. I just saw it in my Mods folder and drew hasty conclusions. Still, it can be installed as usual, just in another place.

Oh, and a very important note:

For some reason, some tree code got really cocked up. So:
a) There are invisible leaves, which, aside from being annoying, aren't much of a danger
b) Huge trees MUST NOT be cut down (i.e. Sequoia and Kapok) - doing so may CRASH THE SERVER altogether.

I... never experienced that while I was testing. I cut down kapok trees fine.

Dammit, that's a first, but I'm not able to install the mod pack. Let me list what I've done:

1. Create a new 1.5.1 instance in MultiMC
2. Add jar mods in the instMods folder
3. Add the other mods in the minecraft/mods folder
4. Plop the config folder in the minecraft folder
5. Edit mods in MultiMC, reload list then rebuild jar.
6. Try to play game
7. Crash because of player.render.API, something maybe about a conflict with another mod which replaces a required file

What did I do wrong?

Make sure forge is the first mod in the jar mods tab and 'smart render' is the last.

Oh. They might've fixed it while I wasn't looking. What about Sequoias? And disappearing leaves?

All I can say is I didn't see them during testing and I was able to cut down a Kapok, though it did break my axe.

And disappearing leaves?
Leaves disapear for me when I cut down trees as well.
So I think that's still a minor issue. (I say minor becaue it dosn't crash the game.)

That's an intentional feature as far as I'm aware. It's there to force you to break the leaves manually before cutting down the tree.

Ah, bad phrasing. Sorry. I meant invisible leaves. So that there physically is a leaf block, which is invisible and unfixable with a texturepack. Most visible in the forest near the spawn on the server.

For a mod which attempts to be realistic, that's kind of unrealistic. :p

I think it's more of a realism feature. So that there are no magic flying leaves in the air. Useless leaves, too, since TFC leaves aren't solid like vanilla leaves.

But having to punch every block of leaves out is tedious as fuck! Realism :D

I'm not sure if we understand what the others are talking about.

In TFC, if you cut down a tree, all of its leaves disappear instantly. Leaves are the only source of Sticks in TFC, so they are a resource. So if you don't manually break the leaves, they disappear yielding nothing.

EDIT: I've found a pretty sweet spot for establishing a settlement. It's around -325 on X and -6366 on Z (pretty much go South from the spawn and keep going then sailing until you hit a chalk desert, then keep going a bit further). It's a nice, temperate forest in a valley between a really huge mountain and the whole region in vicinity.
