A few questions!
« on: July 03, 2012, 09:59:55 pm »

I haven't played DF since the version after 40d. I quit playing because of the game slowing down after I had something like 50 dwarves.  Did the frame rate issue ever get corrected? I also had another in game question.  If you dug a huge pit, like 10 squares down and routed a river into it, would the water eventually fill to ground level? or would it just fill that bottom level? Thanks!

I never played 40D so I don't know what it was like back then.  Regarding the water, see pressure.  Quick and dirty answer, yes, the water will eventually back up to the level it fell from, unless you use pressure elimination techniques.

Thanks for the answer.  In 40D I had no FPS issues at all but when I switched to the next update the game became almost unplayable.  I could just stick with 40D but would like to try out some of the new features.

Welcome back! Dwarf Fortress has been better optimized and while FPS issues do exist, with some management they can be removed. This topic contains many suggestions on how to do so. Mostly easy stuff like some init tampering.

The river will eventually fill the hole up to the ground level. This could take a long time do to the amount of water required, but certainly doable.

Fortunately pressure elimination is incredibly easy if you're so inclined.  A simple diagonal kink in the feed tunnel like this
Code: [Select]
OOOOOOOOOO
OOOOO+++++
+++++OOOOO
OOOOOOOOOO
is sufficient to reset pressure and ensure that water beyond that point will not back up higher than that level.

That will not work for an open hole that is being poured into - all it would do is slow down the filling, e.g. pouring water into a glass out of a teapot that has a narrow spout.

That will prevent water from rising back up to 1 level below the source, e.g.:

Code: [Select]

                                    -----------
                                    |  --------
    _<water will not rise up________|  |
|________Diagonal Kink_________________|
