Overclock that top end hardware. More CPU power = more FPS.
If your box really is top level you should be able to hit 4.5GHz easily with a halfway vaguely sort of decent cooler.

Also, embark somewhere with more Fun.

And that is what makes this game extremely flawed, you cannot play it the way it should be played.

This is where you are mistaken. You assume that the point of Dwarf Fortress is to gain wealth. That's like playing chess for the pretty colors.

Obviously the point of Dwarf Fortress varies from person to person and we could debate about this all day. Some think it's a sandbox game to do whatever you want, some believe it's a story book, others a megaproject and for some it's a who-can-have-the-most-awesome-death-competition.

But wealth is by no means your 'score'. Try doing something different, build a giant upside down castle suspended in the air with only a bar of soap.

Also give Adventurer mode a whirl too.

If the game didn't end from f.p.s. death it would be possible to run a fortress into a boring forever. F.p.s. death is only contained by your computer requirements. F.p.s. death makes you try a new fort.

"Not to mention by the time the game reaches 1.0 in 20 years, fps death probably won't be an issue due to advances in computing."

Thats funny right there.

The graphics are multithreaded.

It's not so much CPU as RAM speed and latency, remember.
From my testing, its definitely CPU cycles, as well as RAM speed and latency.  It maxes out a single core on my friends quad core system, plus uses another 10 or 20 percent of a second core (Mac version for that).  On my computer I haven't checked the CPU core usage, but in Windows I get exactly the same performance as I do in Linux, and the Linux boot has four times the memory available (I really need to get a 64bit version of Winders for when I need to use it ... it sucks not having access to all 16GB of memory then), which tells me its the CPU that is the bottle neck on my computer, not the memory.

I never clean up anything and I am very lazy but yet I never get less than 30 some FPS even when I open up hell.

Maybe your computer needs to be changed.

i play DF multi-threaded.

4 forts with a dedicated processor each ;)

And what's even more depressing is that the game industry sucks ass right now, so there's nothing else worth playing.  Sigh.
I hear ya there, tried JA 1.13 yet?

but yeah, i usu die of imperfect industry logistics not fps. i've only gone as low as 50fps. ~150 dwarves, junk everywhere, everyone's working.
personally, i play to improve automation, make each industry self-reliant. workflow has helped *alot* there.

set your cap to 40 dwarves
THIS would be unplayable. i cannot do without a entourage of at least 80 haulers...

i run a OCed 4ghz (just a bigger heatsink, the OC was a mobo option), 3 platter 2TB samsung F1, 8 gig ram, crossfired mid range ATI, no issue with FPS so far.

How do you play DF multi-threaded?  I thought it was a single thread game?

Also, FPS death is easily avoidable.   First is the "hard" way by editing raws to remove useless items.   Second is getting rid of the contaminants, temperature and stuff like that.

Gameplay wise, it's really just build an atom smasher, destroy useless crap, destroy extra stone, etc.   No big deal.

But yeah...   hemadbro.

What I don't get is why 15 or so fps is considered unplayable. I think of it as inevitable and when it does reach that point I simply put a video on, do some homework, bookkeeping, or reading and check in every couple of minutes. I have fun and get my chores done.

Also, nothing else worth playing? Really? I mean if the only type of game you think is worth playing is DF then I guess you are right, but most people have tastes that run beyond this genre.
