Between that and a fat ugly grand'ma I'd choose the pornstar.
There's a sort of slider between 'pornstar' and 'grandma'

You don't see every girl in the world as either super-hot or super ugly, the majority of people are in between.
Well sex sells always has probably always will can't do much about it.

Likewise, many games sexualize men as well.

Why do so many show males as buff, half-naked, handsome warriors? Why in a game, can't I make an ugly, scrawny dude or one overly overweight?...I'm sure some do...but I know many that do not.

Argument can go both ways. But no one complains about the "males" and only complain about "females".

Anyway, nice to see this game still being updated. To be honest, kind of forgot about this game :P Last I played, I don't think there was a save button...so I didn't play too long.

Unfortunately, saving doesn't work. More specifically, loading doesn't work. It keeps placing me out of map bounds, and the terrain doesn't load properly.

I don't recall all that many Western mainstream games with half-naked men. Like outside of the 90s where every barbarian had to dress like Conan and every woman had to wear bikini versions of real armour.

Also, being ripped (without going into bodybuilder extremes) makes a person better at killing or just lugging heavy equipment about, things you do all the time in combat-heavy video games. You'd want your character to be buff rather than scrawny or overweight, cause that's what a person good at killing things is expected to look like. The same doesn't apply to being an emaciated female super model. It's not a form fit for the task at hand, basically.

Sure, that's what people expect. It really isn't very true though. Look at pictures of soldiers from around the world. And not the publicity shots of the ceremonial units. Like actual soldiers. They are typically fairly average looking. Many of them tend to be quite skinny. The popular notion of the giant soldier is a propaganda technique meant to inspire fear in one's enemies.

EDIT: Though I will gladly concede the point that skin isn't something they are typically showing. Getting shot at is surely unpleasant, getting shot at and getting a sun burn at the same time? Yikes!

Where do you find pictures of soldiers where their skin is showing enough to tell they're not buff? Like being buff doesn't necessarily mean being broader in the shoulders or taller, but just having well-defined musculature. Like the sort that helps in running around with a backpack of equipment and a rifle in hand. Modern uniforms tend to cover up almost all of the body, and they ain't made out of spandex either.

And I guess I was sort of talking more about a general case, where we take melee into account as well. Cause when we move onto guns, build matters way less. But I still think it matters for things like the ability to throw grenades farther, run under load faster, etc..

I figured you were refering to more of your stereotypical Gears of War/ Duke Nukem style meathead.

I've been playing this (alpha 0.52) all morning now, and it's pretty good.

Sure there's some derpy stuff like when i was catapulted in the stratosphere by my bed, and then went through the ground when landing, resulting in horrible body deformation and inability to do anything, but it's already very interesting to play for an alpha. Also, it seems that you can design your own weapons (and probably more in the future), so that's cool. The art is good too. I think that i'll keep playing it for a while and then wait for a more polished version.

Edit : here's a link to see what kind of stuff you can create yourself.

They just started Kickstarter:
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1757963851/planet-explorers

Some multi-pack options as well.

I tried the .52 version, and it was basically a mauled by wildlife simulator, haven't tried the new one they released for Kickstarter yet.

Looked interesting, probably going in with brother on a 2 pack.

It's amazing how many of these voxel/minecraft/exploration/survival games get started.

It's also amazing how none of them ever get finished.
