Hahah sorry guys, I should have said the first block of versions is how it should go, but it usually ends up like the second block. Toady writing DF is a weird case because he's doing so much functionality. I really think it's legitimately in Alpha still because he hasn't coded everything he wants in the game. That doesn't mean it's perpetual-Alpha ... I believe and hope he'll finish someday given the current structure and plans he's put out.

And yes, DF feels more like a Beta, but that's only because the currently coded features are so fun. Think about Dark Cloud's game design: fight dungeon, complete bonus events, build town. What if the dungeon was complete, but the events and town hadn't been started yet? It might feel like a Release dungeon crawler but it's actually an Alpha dungeon crawl / city-builder + minigames. Maybe we're more used to seeing a dev cycle that works on everything at once and finishes all at once rather than completing chunk by chunk.

PS I think DF is playable and you quickly remember the keystrokes and the layout of an area but a UI could help.

DF isn't playable? 'Alpha tester' is just a fancy name for people staring at a still image? Is that what you mean?
DF is hardly playable. I have not actually played in over a year bugs and lack of usable interface kill it for me. And just because it is labeled alpha doesn't mean crap. Toady could call it 'final continuous release version prime' for all the label matters.

Goron; game development extraordinaire that definitely knows when a game is/isn't playable.  ::) What bugs have you encountered that broke the game for you completely that weren't fixed for years, or by your account still haven't been fixed? I'm curious since you're so vehement in your accusation that DF is unplayable.

This game doesn't run for me at all unfortunately. Le sigh.

Unfortunately for some people an interface that's bad can kill playability. I honestly agree until some long put off work is put into making that mess make sense.

For some, DF is not playable. The interface is confusing, the game runs slow on older hardware, it still has crashes etc etc. Im ok with this, I have learn't to use the interface, and I have modern computer hardware etc. But for alot of people this is not the case. I can understand why people find the game unplayable.

And no, 'Alpha tester' is not a fancy name for people who stare at a still image, its a name for people who test and find issues with games, for example only getting a still image. The issue you selected could be considered a subset of what an alpha tester can go through, but its still a valid part.

And lets not forget to consider the possibility that they are completely new to this. They may never had considered that people would be running on old hardware, or an operating system nearly a decade old. Telling them about their mistake is good and helpful. Strong hateful emoting is useless.

Two different games. He's saying that DF is quite playable (at least if you manage to put up with the eldritch UI; many many bugs have been fixed in the last year). Planet Explorers, however, is not.

Bit of a necro bump, but I just saw the RPS article on this (with two videos).  Alpha 0.41 has been released, and it looks a wee bit intriguing.

I mean, look at us.  You give us a young child and a puppy, and we produce, possibly, one of the biggest sins against nature the game has ever seen.

This is pretty good, actually. Custom-designed weapons and vehicles? Hell yes. It seems that weapons you design yourself a more powerful and cheaper to make than the default items you can make.

Also, some screenshots:

I don't think vehicles are implemented yet. I can't figure out what materials are needed, or how to aquire them.

Well, why am I not surprised women in this game look like some sort of model?

I swear to god, people who design games seem to be under the impression all gamers want from girls is the ability to fap to them ::)
Oh, I did that myself. What else do you expect with a slider to determine breast size?
(also, the thorax slider has a crazy effect on bust size)
