Author Topic: Help save Crittermod! The WxSand mod that has a living and breathing creature!  (Read 4557 times)

Hello guys, for about 3 months total i have worked on a mod of a mod for a game called WxSand, called Creaturemod. Originally by resident FSG user Jabberwock(god knows where he is now) i have made some improvements to it. The basic premise is that it is a living and breathing organism with organs. There is a variety of diseases and stuff. I made alot of new chemicals, "BDCS"(BioDegradeable Containment Solution) for bandaging, and various enzymes for namely removing BDCS and cleaning up dead things. I also added things such as surgercial fluid and syntflesh, generally improving the medical situation for the average creature.

It happended upon me that the version i use of WxSand has a bug/limit that limits the ammount of visible elements. Wich sucks alot.
The newest version of WxSand has alot of changed syntax, effectively making porting impossible. Alias, i cant continue.
I would hack the source of WxSand but the site that hosts the source is infected with a virus and the creator of WxSand, Owne Piette has apparently disappeared, last blog post, while the site was viewable, was from 2007.

I only have one alternative, make a new program that can handle the logic behind Creaturemod, but i suck at programming, and i have a horrible concentration issue with things i cant see straight out, i mean with Creaturemod i could just click reload mod in WxSand and it would have all the new elements. I would have to wait for shit to compile and the obscure crappy compiler errors would proably make it completely unbearable for me. I dunno, but if you guys could help me.

What the mod originally featured:

A living and breathing creautre
A plethora of diseases and weapons to kill and maim the creatures with
Very limited and basic tools for surgery and disease curing.
A horrible death system that was basically just turning the whole creature into a mass that decays into blood that cant harden.

What i made it feature:
Blood that Hardens, Tweaked fire, Oil from the first version of Creaturemod
A somewhat slower rotting process
More radioactives
Alot of surgercial tools
A somewhat unfinished life support system(respirators and stuff) this was where the thing choked and died.

What i wanted it to feature:
A much more realistic death and decay system
Sensory organs, Pherohormones and Reproduction
Cyborgification

What i wanted it to feature but knew wouldnt be possible in WxSand:
Moving creatures
Playing as a creature
Multiplayer
Rigid body physics

So i am asking you Bay12, my friends, help.

Since i think most people have no idea what FSG would stand for (I did not) or even what this game you talking about it is (its rather obscure), I went ahead and Googled it and here I provide for everyone else what your OP does not:

Man, FSG, I remember those forums. Do you remember the alchemy mod for wxSand, by Luod0153? That was me :P

Really? Awesome! I remember playing the fuck out of that mod!
But still, Creaturemod was my all time favorite. And now i cant make it what i truely wanted it to be. I get this bug with when i got alot of elelemtns, they wont show up in the menu, even if i set them to  be visible, i put em in groups too, its really annoying!

What would be really awesome would be a Poder Toy mod, but thats proably impossible, and i hate compilers, so no programming for me, atleast right now.

Heh, I'm Normandy333 if that wasn't obvious already. You should try my wxInvaders mod, it's basically a shmup... in a sand game.

Newer versions of wxSand have the exact same syntax for elements/reactions from 4.4, so it should be able to run without any issue (although I can only confirm this for 4.5, but in theory 4.6 should be the same). The only changed syntax is for newer additions like items and custom hotcolors.

Also, I think purple's version of wxSand (i.e. 4.6) may have removed the element limit (I forget if that's actually true).

Addendum:
The last version I actually played/modded was 4.5, so I'm not sure exactly what changes 4.6 has.

A new conductivity value in the element definitions, it would require all the elements to be redefined, wich would be horribly annoying.
My best guess is making Creaturemod an actual program.

From what I understand it's not a new value, it's just changing the way that conductivity works (which was always a property of elements) to something more sensible. The only thing that needs to be redone is tweaking of heat-generating and heat-sensitive elements.
