Looking for good mud or mush
« on: July 01, 2012, 09:54:47 am »

Basically what it says on the tin. Once upon a time I was on a roleplay mud which I greatly enjoyed, unfortunately the server has gone down and I'm not too sure if it'll be coming back up anytime soon  :'(
So basically, now that such a long time has passed (it's atleast 4 months.. Maybe longer) I've decided to start looking for a new one. Since the people here on this forum seem to have similar tastes to me, I decided to ask around. So here goes.

What I'm specifically looking for:
Most important thing, the other players on line must like talking. I hate muds/mushes when the people on line JUST grind. I want playing AND talking.
Should have at least some form of crafting. The broader, the better.
Must have combat, whether it is roleplayed out or if there are actual stats.
Should have some way for the player to gain property, whether it be land or boat. Not too important though.
Lots of bonus points for roleplaying.
If you community has already formed a group on the mud/mush, or would like to, then I'd like to join in even more.

I know that there is a hellmoo thread on the forum, but from what I see, there is not much roleplaying, crafting or even talking in it, so I didn't try for very long. Perhaps I'll try again though.

Also, not too worried if the game is realistic, or fantasy, or futuristic or medieval. Just not modern.
So.. Anyone? Please?

*EDIT*
I also remeber someone posted a while back about a mud where he rode a giant worm to make a trading path for his guild or something? That one sounded pretty cool, if anyone remembers what it was called, I'd appreciate info.

I believe this is Medievia, but I'm not 100% sure. I think it has a thread on this forum though, so try searching a bit and see if that helps.

I think RetroMUD is often said to be a good one. It's got a nce class system too, where you could technically train every class to at least 9. I think you can train in one class up to 20, a second up to 15, and all after that to 9.

Ahh yes, it was. Thank you. I'll be checking out both it, and this Retro mud

I also remember a MUD called ZombieMUD that you might enjoy. There wasn't a ton of roleplaying, as far as I remember, but the gameplay was pretty fun. (I don't remember it a whole lot though, or I'd give some more details.)

Roleplay-Intensive (aka mandatory and enforced) MUD Shadows of Isildur was my "virtual home" for a while :) It's really about having a life in Tolkien's world. No numbers are shown anywhere, but there are stats and combat. It was real nice when I was playing it 8 or so years ago :)

The best I have ever played(played a lot of them) was/is Deckeon.
It's a Shadowrun Mush that meets most if not all of your requirements http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=91280.msg2540607;topicseen#msg2540607

That is, infact, the mud I used to be on. But they're closed at the moment, and all the evil characters have been purged, and it seems no-one is going to be allowed to play them again. So.. *shrug*

I'll give it a try later today.

Gonna throw in a strong recommendation for Armageddon MUD.

Quote
Most important thing, the other players on line must like talking. I hate muds/mushes when the people on line JUST grind. I want playing AND talking.

It's an RPI MUD where grinding is actually stigmatized.  There are actually quite strict caps hardcoded into the game to prevent this.

Quote
Should have at least some form of crafting. The broader, the better.

There are several Houses which focus primarily on crafting, as well as a slew of independent characters making their living this way.

Quote
Must have combat, whether it is roleplayed out or if there are actual stats.

Combat is coded and relies upon both stats and skills.  You're strongly encouraged to roleplay along with the coded stuff though.

Quote
Should have some way for the player to gain property, whether it be land or boat. Not too important though.

Silt skimmers (boats), (rented) apartments and a variety of mounts are available.  As for land, just go stake your claim.  Chances are the locals won't be too keen on you trying this though ;D

Lots of bonus points for roleplaying.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by this.  Armageddon doesn't really have any kind of 'points' other than karma, which is awarded to those who show themselves capable of handling more complex roles such as desert elves or magickers.  If you meant a system that encourages RP, there's no need for that here.  Roleplay is pretty much the sole reason anyone plays it.

There's a pretty strict rule about sharing IC (in character) information out of game, so this may be a little difficult.  There are quite a few clans in the game and I'd strongly recommend the T'zai Byn (a low down and dirty group of mercenaries) for any new players.  It's kinda the unofficial newb clan and the leaders there are likely to be as helpful as possible of they pick up on you being new to the game.

It's a fantasy game heavily influenced by Dark Sun if that means anything to you.

Wayfar1444.com port 7777

EXTREMELY massive crafting system, skills that are learned via skill points but aren't just strictly 14 strength sort. The only issue is that it is a Hellcore MUSH, and thus lacks what is considered the normal RP of other MUSH's. Instead, you are somewhat expected to play a psychotic madman bent on killing everyone and trusting few, if any people, even those in your own corporation, but even that isn't enforced. Just don't go into any Hellcore game expecting to do any serious RP without A: Risking ridicule, or B: Learning the game and figuring out exactly how to go about it.

Ustxu Iceraped the Frigid Crystal of Slaughter was a glacier titan. It was the only one of its kind. A gigantic feathered carp composed of crystal glass. It has five mouths full of treacherous teeth, enormous clear wings, and ferocious blue eyes. Beware its icy breath! Ustxu was associated with oceans, glaciers, boats, and murder.

What I meant was, there was a much higher chance of me joining if there was roleplay. Now if the community to this Armageddon MUD is active, and is as you described, you may have just described my dream game.

I'm not really into the whole.. Madman thing. It's why I didn't really like Hellmoo. *shrug* Thanks for trying though. Really.

52 players are logged in at this exact moment, there's generally a few more at peak times.  My playing times are generally about as off peak as it's possible to get and it's very rare that I have difficulty finding someone to RP with.

If you have any questions or want any advice or help with your first character app, feel free to drop me a PM and I'll chuck you my email address or a link to my Steam account.

You'd probably dig AtonementRPI

http://www.atonementrpi.com/index.php?option=com_agora

In the near future, Earth went full apocalypse due to supervolcanoes.  So humanity fled in various "Phoenix" ark-like colony ships.

In Alpha, you found yourself as an amnesiac awoken from suspended animation on one such colonyship.  Things went horribly wrong, and the ship crashlanded on the Moon, where a ramshackle terraformed colony was discovered.  For Beta, things went horribly wrong on the Moon, and the survivors fled on a refurbished colony ship.  ...Hence now you play as an amnesiac awoken from suspended animation on a colony ship...and things are going horribly wrong.

It's an RPI admin'd and populated by alot of ArmageddonRPI and SOI vets.  I haven't played actively in forever, but if you're looking to roleplay with some pretty harsh permadeath, AtonementRPI is your game.

This round is particularly interesting because they made crafters vital to everyone's survival.  The ship is severely damaged, and requires maintance in various locations to prevent hull breaches.  Also, alot of equipment requires repair and a roleplayed inventor/research system is essential to making progress in the overall plot.

So yeah, if you really wanted to roleplay a greasemonkey, you'd fit in great at Atonement RPI.
