None of my fortresses have actually gotten to the point where they're making metal yet (right now I'm still trying to figure out how to make a bridge   ) but I've found that obsidian swords make decent weapons, and you can use them in traps, too.

Pressure plate traps work like levers--you can hook them up to other stuff, like having a room with open floodgates at either end that seals itself off when an enemy walks in and trips the pressure plate. Or a room with closed floodgates that floods itself when the enemy trips it, although this one is probably really dangerous to use.

I have a question though: how exactly does the "effect permanent" setting on pressure plates work? If I have it turned off, does that mean that it automatically resets every time an enemy crosses it (meaning that it will get switched on and off continually if a band of enemies passes)? If I turn it on, can I reset the pressure plate manually or is it really permanent until I build a new pressure plate?

You know, I saw that option about a month ago, and I've completely forgotten what it does.  I think it stops reset, but I know nothing about the finer points now.  Worth experimenting with, and I'll make a note to document what I find.
