Honestly, just use MSE. The better part of security is on the user side anyway. Avoid installing unnecessary software and browsing shady websites and you'll be fine.
This.

Microsoft Security Essentials is a good lightweight tool from Microsoft themselves. Plus, it's free.

Aside from that, using a good browser, such as Firefox with NoScript goes a long way toward computer security.

Popular consensus on the Internet is that Norton with its shovelware and ridiculous overheads is a more effective virus than many actual viruses.
Popular consensus between techs says otherwise

Norton injects itself into .dll files in system32... close enough to a virus itself that I don't touch it anymore. When you have to use another tool just to remove something that's supposed to protect your computer, it's too much of a hassle (and you're supposedly, in order to get rid of it, uninstall normally, use the removal tool, reboot, and run the removal tool a second time). Seemed to slow my computer down quite a bit too. Similar results with McAfee

If you're looking to pay for something, though, I've had good experiences with Kaspersky. Even then, my exposure with viruses were limited to my younger and less... competent days. The best security option is just being smart about your browser and browsing habits.

I use kaspersky. It's pretty good, albeit not free but it works for me.

Kaspersky is the king of AV. Eset Nod32 gives good protection as well. The other two pieces of AV software that I recommend are TrendMicro (it's very light, and updates are quick and frequent) and Panda. Tellemurius will disagree with me here (I'm afraid this happens frequently, which sucks, because I really like Telle!) but I would never recommend Norton to anyone for anything. Yeah, they have gotten better over the years, but anything that deliberately makes itself damn near impossible to uninstall completely should be treated as a virus. Norton does this with a passion.

As far as free protection goes, AVG, Avast and Avira are hard to beat, but their databases tend to get outpaced quickly. MSE used to give me a lot of false positives, but I haven't used that since 2010, so it may be better now. Spybot S&D and MalwareBytes are wonderful companion pieces to any AV, and should be used with aplomb.

Either way, congrats for getting out from under McAfee. I hate that more than I do Norton.

If Norton is so hard to remove why did they make the removal tool then and not a pissed tech? :P

The problem is that you shouldn't need a special "removal tool" to get rid of something. That pisses me off to no end.

Too bad most programs have them anyways; not everything is deleted, transferred, cleaned, installed properly, thats why my job field exist.

Mine too, bro, mine too. It just pisses me off when programs cling to existence despite the user not wanting said program on their machine.

I must stand by Comodo Internet Security for free software. It is quite powerful, not terribly memory hungry and only interrupts while learning; otherwise it's quite silent.
It runs well on my ancient XP (2.53GHZ single core, 256MB DDR RAM).

As for paid security, I'd suggest ESET SS/NOD32. One of the few non-shovelwared antivirii left on the market.

Spybot SD works very well as an additional line of defense, and it's free! It's also quite silent.

As for Norton:

  • Bloated, slow, interrupty
  • Monitors all too much, comes up with false positives 9 times out of 10... (figure of speech, its detection rate is better than that... 56% iirc).
  • When my subscription ran out I lost access to the files stored in backup

I'd have to be an eSet guy or MSE with firefox and no script.

Avast! gets cred from me for that preboot scan option.

Ive used Comodo Internet Security free for ages and had zero issues with dodgy crap going wrong on pc..

It also has Comodo secure DNS that stops u getting sent to any flagged sites that could cause issues or phishing fraud.

Has firewall, Antivirus, Anti malware and cloud scanning with file vetting if unknown or suspicious acting which keeps popup warnings to a minimum.  Updates a few times a day and is fast to load and run scans.

Kaspersky is the king of AV.

You need the antivirus guide!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Use ESET, go get the key, if you have firefox follow the tips.
Enjoy.

You should never ever pay for anti-virus software.
