Hey everyone really need help with picking a anti virus, I have been using the BT macafe because it came free with my ISP.

I'm getting sick of it now and really need help on picking a decent anti virus I Emma I have checked out alot of articles ( latest I could find was 2011 ) and they said norton was the best. But I know alot of you would disagree.

But the antivirus needs to be anti spyware as well and have a built in firewall and have a good system

But I need to pick quickly because I need my main computer back up and running again ASAP ( I  formatted it after haveing net guard from macafe block a strange connection which had never happened before ( yes I'm very paranoid ( and yes I know what I'm doing computer security of my IT field in uni )))

You could check out Avast!. I use that and I have seen it recommended a number of times here. I'm not sure if it has everything you want, but it seems to work good. Also, Spybot-Search and Destroy is good for removing spyware. The free version of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is good for on demand removal. Hope you find what you're looking for!

Seconding Avast! for a free anti-virus. Run scans with Spybot S&D and Malwarebytes to see if they find your problem.
I can't personally recommend any premium programs, but I've heard good things about Nod32 as a paid AV, and it seems to have a free trial.

Nod32/ESET Smart Security (They're the same thing, just ESETSS is just moar stuff) is great. It doesn't interfere that much with what you're trying to do, it's just there to shoot the viruses and grab a cup of coffee. But you have to pay for it to update.

Also please why not norton a little explanation because I'm baffled right now everywhere I look norton 2012 is said to be the best and has the best detection rate, even on amazon the reviews are good

Tech time, Norton is great, its great protection as long as you got lots of processing power it won't bother you at all. Avast is horrible as its not very good on sniffing out trojans and once you are infected you're fucked. Nod32 and ESET are good but support is terribad for them. Also the best antivirus is no antivirus
In the end you will get infected no matter what.

well load heavy not a problem for me, im on a 4.5 ghz i7 2600k ( built my PC my self ) and will soon be updating to ivy bridge, work load is not a problem, so norton it is then and also do i get norton or norton 360 ?

also Tellemurius thanks for the help, and that ip address which my macafee blocked, should i be worried about it at all or not ? since then i have reset my router and gained a new IP address and formatted my machine and done a clean install ( my machine needed it anyway )

Being traced back to Comodo i think you would have just got a ad to buy their antivirus

Norton 360 Appalling annoying, their version of UAC is stupid as hell, keep it simple and stick with just a antivirus.

Popular consensus on the Internet is that Norton with its shovelware and ridiculous overheads is a more effective virus than many actual viruses. Avast is alright if it's in combination with others, MBAM (Malwarebytes Antimalware) is an excellent tool, the major issue being it only scans when you tell it to. Paid antivirus wise, I've heard good things about ESET and Kaspersky.

Honestly, just use MSE. The better part of security is on the user side anyway. Avoid installing unnecessary software and browsing shady websites and you'll be fine.
