I have a squad of 3 marksdwarfs, they've been assigned a crossbow and dagger each along with amunition. When ever I order them to attack something, they run up to it melee it with the crossbow or shoot the target standing right next to it. Is there anyway I can keep them from doing this and make them stand from afar and shoot at them?

Sounds like they don't have any ammunition or the lack of the ability to carry any.

Can you check to see if they are carrying quivers and have bolts available to pick up?

One caveat that I notice with xbow dwarves is that once the order is given to kill something they will shoot until they are out and then run to beat it with the xbow. You have to cancel the kill order, let them pick up their equipment and then order them again AFAIK.

The dagger is probably screwing with them. Try removing it and see if that helps.
