Games With lethal combat
« on: June 30, 2012, 05:35:13 pm »

Yes, technically all combat games have lethal fighting, but what are the games where dying seems like the norms. games where you arrive with a party of twelve and comeback with two people, etc.

I have to say ones of the biggest is x-com, and let's not forget Dwarf fortress.

Does anyone want to trade something for Terraria on steam? Will consider most non-indie bundle (except Bastion) game offers.

Men of War is quite good at this. It can be absolutely unforgiving if you misstep.

Mount and Blade might be another one, in combat at equitable damage settings that the AI bots take and deliver, you go down pretty fast if you get over confident as will your troops if you don't manage them against an enemy of comparable strength. The only thing that doesn't seem to be as harsh is that you will never die, although losing all your men and property when you lose a battle is pretty punishing in some people's eyes.

Overgrowth is sort of one- while you're only one person, it looks like you'll be able to die in about one second flat if you misstep or mess up. Weapons are also pretty realistic- a sword hit is instakill.

The Rainbow Six games, prior to Las Vegas, could be absolutely brutal. Your operatives have lightning reflexes, but they'll die in 1 or 2 shots. Poor planning or being too quick to enter a room can easily spell the end for a few of them, though it is possible to complete missions without losing anyone.

Flatspace. While you don't get to have a whole lot of followers unless you get a carrer. (Something that is IMO nearly impossible)

However dying horribly just happens every several minutes no matter how hard you try.

One enemy happened to have high tech homing missiles?
Bam you're DEAD.
Random shot damaged your engine/reactor?
You're dead (not quite but usually you're dead meat at this point unless you have someone with skill in maitenance (or a robot) and the attacker decides to stop shooting at you.
You accidentaly hit/bumped any vessel docnig at the station?
All station turrets open fire at you and the station itself sends around 10 fighters to kill you for good.

It's a VERY brutal and unforgiving game.

Oh  and did i mention it has permadeath?
Happily you can turn it off...

7.62 High Calibre - Even little skirmishes can be deadly if/when one bullet finds an unlucky target. Recruiting new mercs is difficult, especially when you have a reputation for getting them killed.

Lugaru is very much the same. Taking a weapon into combat, especially a sword, is dangerous for all parties involved. Overgrowth being the sequel to Lugaru for those that don't know.

All the Bohemia Interactive war simulation games are or can be pretty hardcore like this. One bullet in the wrong place and you're dead. So any of these except the Take On Helicopters one and the Firing Range one I'd imagine.

Mount and Blade all the way.  I had a skirmish with forest bandits that killed 25% of my party.  Any successful guide on the game starts with "get the villages popular with you, you'll be recruiting from them frequently."  It's really nothing to lose two dozen men in a normal day, and the truly massive battles can become so big that it takes 5-6 battles, one after the other, and tear you down from like 200 down to 50 if you're winning, and totally strip you if you lose.

I forgot one- America's Army 3. (on steam) While your guy can take a few hits on his limbs and such, every headshot is a kill/incapacitation, blood loss is a major problem, grenades are deadly, do say the least, and your chest is protected by body armor- which absorbs one or two hits before failing. Also, the medic system is relatively realistic, which is a nice touch.

The Arma series also seems quite unforgiving with how easily everything can go ploin shaped.

DF doesn't mold players into its image - DF merely selects those who were always ready for DF.

Minecraft UI is very simple. There's only so many ways you can implement "simple" without copying something. We also gonna complain that it uses WASD?

Ah xcom; making very funny base names, getting emotionally attached to Hans only to get him killed by a muton 20 battles in, raging that your stun bombs dont seem to take out that one snakeman in the desert even after hitting it with a half dozen, being very upset that that one ship you didnt crash just happenedto make a terrorist action, and wondering if the cases in alien bases are alien food or entertainment...

Good times.

All the modes revert to cakewalk mode, and it's still unforgiving.
ARMa 2 fits the bill, and basically every roguelike does too.

Silent Storm, which is now available on gog.com for ten bucks.

I'm finally playing this game through for the first time and it's really fun yet extremely aggravating due to the fact that injuries tend to royally fuck up your shooting skills permanently although this can be mitigated if you know how.
