Perhaps you've heard of the roguelike genre, and the original Rogue that started it all. It's approximately the 32nd anniversary of Rogue, and rlgallery.org is celebrating with a
tournament.
rlgallery.org is a public server, like nethack.alt.org or crawl.akrasiac.org, but it offers the original Rogue and other early roguelikes. You can watch other people play, and games are recorded, so you can prove the truth of your stories. Currently available are three versions of Rogue, along with Super-Rogue, one of the first variants.
The site also has a Web interface that will let you play in your browser instead of over SSH.
The tournament is scheduled to begin at midnight UTC on July 1 and last two weeks until midnight UTC on July 15. All games which begin and end during this time period count toward the tournament.
Rogue is known to be a harder game than NetHack or Crawl. To give you an idea of how much harder, the server has been online for two and a half years and I've never bothered to make the scoreboard do anything special for victories.
Despite being nearly impossible, Rogue is still fun and replayable, and games don't take days to finish. If you've never tried it before, or want to see what its original environment was like, come and search for the Amulet of Yendor!
