This game seems quite impressive from what I can see, but I am busy with work, so first can I ask, what does gameplay actually consist of?

Running around firing a radiation gun at random stuff to see what monstrosities it produces.

Knowing Belgium, everyone will vote for themselves out of mistrust for anyone else, and some kind of weird direct democracy coalition will need to be formed from 11 million or so individuals.

Which is how I would do science in real life.

Watching monsters so horrible that Cthulhu would need a SAN check to look at them secks corpses seems to be a popular pastime.

Just looked at the Wiki on the site to get a better understanding of the mechanics, and I see one glaring problem:

Quote
When health hits 0, a creature will die. All the energy it used up during it's lifetime will be converted into biomass (red), which can then be eaten by carnivores.

This means really old creatures who spent a lot of time being active would have the most nutritional value. Couple of problems with that:
1. Excessively aged specimens tend to be atrophied and nutrient-deficient compared to healthy adults.
2. Highly active animals will have good levels of muscle (and thus high protein content), but low fat reserves. Relatively sedentary animals will lack muscle but have high fat content, which is calorically superior to muscle tissue. Predators would rather eat a Kobe steer than an antelope.

I think it's s termporary simplification.
I know, but it's a little jarring coming to that from a game that simulates bodily tissue layers and fat content in every critter.  :P

DF has tissue layers, and animals don't even eat there.

I was talking about DF. Because Toady has made it his life's work to include incredibly awesome levels of detail, whether they're needed or not.

Animals eat in DF. If you've played Adventurer mode, you've seen this,
"The Chicken roots around in the grass." Or something similar.

And some animals tend to die if you don't put them on grass.
You know,
to eat the grass.

EDIT: Downloading now, it seems pretty awesome for an alpha, from what i've looked at.

I'm guessing it tries to make the offspring of one creature have the features of both, at random.
Maybe.

Anyway, I, myself, am questioning my scientific abilities, as anything more advanced than a slug thing has died thus far.

So what does gene splice do?
It's basically forced mating.

Hark, ye knaves!
Repent!
The end was but nigh, but thee most glorious creature has survived aught but the mightiest dangers!

I have managed to create a creature with 4 legs, and it MADE A CHILD!
Woo!
The child had legs too!
So with a meager 9 creatures left, I have turned the tables of existance!
EDIT: So at this point it eats trees whole.
IT JUST MADE 8 MORE BABIES!
