Beginner on Trading. Help
« on: December 26, 2007, 07:17:00 am »

Can someone explain the trading sequence to me. I finally managed to get to the first trading, but in the end, when the caravan took of, I didnt get rid of any of my artifacts.

This "White Guy" came in beforehand, and asked me what I wanted from them. I told him that I wanted this-n-that. Then the caravan show up 1 - 2 month later. I hurry and build me trade depot (just outside my fortress). The caravan stops at the depot, and I start marking some bins for PENDING. My workers haul 2 of the 3 bins to the depot, but nothing more happens. I cant press the "(t) TRADE) button on the depot.

Question:
1. This "White Guy @" was he a part of the caravan? I seemed like he was part of my bloodline, and came asking if I needed any help. Is he linked to the trading caravan?

2. Explain to me all the steps from when the first guy arrives asking if I need anything, to when the donkeys take of from the depot.

Thanx!!

1. Caravan arrives on map (starts moving towards depot)
2. 'q' trade depot, 'g' to mark items to be moved to depot (these will start being moved to depot by haulers)
3. Caravan arrives at depot
4. 'q' trade depot, 'r' request trader at depot (disable all other jobs on trader to get him to depot sooner)
5. Trader and caravan are both at depot. Some or all items you requested for trade are also at depot
6. 'q' trade depot, 't' trade
7. This is where trading actually takes place. The keys are listed on the page, so you shouldn't have trouble with this part
8. 'q' trade depot, 'r' no trader needed at depot
9. Some time later, the caravan leaves. At some point, the stuff you now own gets moved also gets moved from the depot to stockpiles

The "white guy" is the liason. Here you request what the caravan brings the following year. The human liason only affects the next years human caravan, the dwarven liason only affects the next years dwarven caravan and so on. He arrives with the caravan, leaves independantly from the caravan after meeting with a member of your fortress (the mayor or a noble or such).

Did you request your Broker to go to the Depot to trade?  You should deactivate all labors for the Broker to ensure he get there.

what people have said so far is correct. it took me quite a long time to learn to trade well.

in addition:

appraisel skill can be trained up by trading...the more value you trade, the better he gets.

you cannot trade artifacts.

the @ sign may not have been your liason, he might also be a caravan guard. All dwarves that are not your own show up as "@". the exception is the sheriff/captain of the guard, and a berserk dwarf.

You could also toggle the only broker may trade button.  This will let any free dwarf do your trading, and if your in a hurry, may be your best choice, even if they don't have appraise.  (Note: without the appraisal skill, you wont know how much things cost though.)

I'm too lazy to check, but I believe that showing the value of things simply requires a broker with appraisal, not that the broker be doing the trading.  I know for a fact that if you do not have a broker with appraisal, even if the person doing the trading is a legendary appraiser, it will not show prices.

The advantage of having the broker trade is a) to get that appraisal skill to begin with, but b) to get the social skills useful in trading.  This'll reduce the ratio of your goods to trader goods that you must trade for the merchant to accept, and how many failed trades can occur before the merchants get angry.

Also, you can manufacture vomit at a smelter.  Subsequently removing the smelter spews vomit over a surprising area.

Really?  I have never tried this but it just doesn't seem right.
