Grow above ground trees inside?

If i put a roof above my garden will (above ground) trees still grow there?

They will.
Every terrain that has been exposed to sunlight is marked as above ground (and lit) and will remain so even if it is covered again.

Does the roof have to be 2 z-levels above the ground, since trees are that tall?
I suspect that if there's only 1 z-level of space, you just get dead saplings, but I'm not certain.

Hm ... underground trees don't need extra high rooms, I don't know about above ground trees. I never had them, I only use roofed fields for crops.

No.  My indoor pasture is forever growing trees and the roof is one z-level up.

Oh OK, I guess the tops of trees are like floor. Trees are walls with leaves and twigs on.

Exactly, on my latest siege a missed crossbow bolt ended up being perched on top of a tree.
