Can you modify brewing? [moving thread]
« on: June 29, 2012, 01:57:53 am »

So I wanted to take a shot at making my first changes to the game.  My thought was to change the brewing reaction(s) so that it requires water as a reagent (since it does).  I've read the wiki on modding and also on reactions and then looked for the reaction in my reaction_other.txt and then when I couldn't find it, reaction_smelter.txt.

Since I can't find anything about brewing in either file, nor any other file that looks relevent, can I assume this is going to be a larger job than just adding a reagent to an already existing reaction?  Will it even be possible to do?

No.

What exactly do you want to do?

No.

Change the brewing reaction to make it require water.

Sadly, I think the still's reactions are hardcoded - you can't change how 'Brew Drink' works. I think.

then looked for the reaction in my reaction_other.txt and then when I couldn't find it, reaction_smelter.txt.

And this would be the reason. The old buildings don't have modifiable reactions.

Well, with quite some work it can get done.

First of all, the booze is coded into the plants itself. Remove brew-able / the [USE_MATERIAL_TEMPLATE:DRINK:PLANT_ALCOHOL_TEMPLATE] from all of them will render the "normal way" useless.

I wouldnt know how to go on about making a workshop use a bucket or barrel of water, so i daresay you could do a custom interaction for filling barrels with water. Or rather, "custom water" - create a new material, because using the hardcoded water might be impossible. I'm pretty sure you could mod an interaction into a well, else you have to make special custom ones.

Now you just add interactions that needs 1 plant and 1 "water" with a product ratio that you like.

Not that much into reactions, there might be trouble because the water is already in a barrel and the reaction might consume it, but some of the others ought to be able to help you there.

Having said all that, i really like your idea for the realism. A well would get mandatory, but with a good end-product ratio it wouldnt get too cumbersome. Or rather, done the right way i'm sure that this idea could get very enriching for the gameplay.

WATER:NONE is water. The imposible part would be getting water consistently enough to use in brewing, without resorting to a "Fill Barrel" reaction or something.

Okay, sounds like it's definitely not easy and probably not possible.

It looks like you can create new types of workshops though.  Do you think it would be possible to make a new workshop, called NewStill or something, then create a new reaction like, sweet-pod + water + barrel + brewing labor = rum?

I will try it this afternoon and see.

Edit: I just found the modify reactions thread.  I'm going to close this thread and move my questions over there.
