So, I'm building my own computer...
« on: June 29, 2012, 12:38:15 am »

Today all the parts for my new, souped up gaming computer arrived and I managed to get it pretty much done within one day. When I went to turn it on, the only thing that lighted up was the LED on the motherboard. It seems that the switches on the front of the case are not providing enough power to the entire thing, or something along those lines. I'm no expert on these things, so it's perfectly likely that I messed something up somewhere along the line. I'm pretty darned sure I did it right, though. Any advice?

Here are the various parts of my Frankenstein's Computer:
An Asus P8Z77-V Pro motherboard
An Intel core I-5 processor
An HIS Radeon HD7850 (or something) video card
And a Thermaltake smart 630W power supply

Hmm power supply or motherboard is having issues, if you don't hear a beep and the light is up the motherboard is getting power so psu still good, toasted mobo at most.

Are you sure you have the power switch connected to the correct pin(s) on the MOBO?  Check your MOBO's installation guide and doublecheck.

There comes a time when you must take off the soft, furry slippers of a boy and put on the shoes of a man.
Unless of course they don't fit properly and your feet blister up like bubble wrap.
Oh ho ho, but don't try to return the shoes, because they won't take them back once you've worn them.
Especially if that fat pig Tony is at the desk.

Yes, this. I built my first computer about a year ago and had spent an hour trying to figure out why it wasn't turning on. Turned out the power button was connected to the wrong pins.

Make sure you have the correct power cables to each thing, Motherboard power and gfx card power...

There are sometimes 2 different types of 6/8 pin connectors and 4 pin connectors on a power supply that you could possible force into the wrong hole.

Well, I fumbled around with it for a bit, and I'm currently posting this from the computer. It can run Skyrim on ultra high settings! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

OOOO

OO

But yeah. Thanks for the advice, and sorry that I bragged a bit. I'm just a bit excited that I'm upgrading from a fairly crappy laptop to an awesome desktop.

I'm pretty sure everyone feels that way when they get something cool.  ;)
