ive got plenty of charcoal to for my furnace but galena is still red when i try to make lead, im not sure what im doing wrong here

I don't know either. Can you cancel one of the manager-created-jobs and try again to manually tell them to smelt galena, to see if it works now?

was there a burrow that included the coal but not the galena?

note that you can't use bitumous coal directly, you first need to make coke from it and then use the coke to smelt the galena.
Additionally, in order to make coke from coal you need 1 unit of either coke or charcoal upfront and then can process it into 9 units of coke. So unless you brought/ bought at least 1 unit of coke / charcoal with you, you will need to build a wood furnace and produce an initial fuel unit from wood to get the coal to coke process started.

If you read the first post, you'll notice that charcoal was meant, not coal as seemed in the title. If you read some more posts you'll see that assigning it through the manager worked, so the problem is in setting the jobs at the smelter. This usually means that the smelter is in a burrow that doesn't include one or more of the ingredients.

Do you have the furnace set to take from a certain stockpile?  If so, then you'll need to set the furnace to also take from a stockpile that has coke and/or charcoal in it.

I've read that reagents REALLY far from the workshop aren't accounted for. Maybe that's the issue.
