Forged Alliance ForeverThere's been a lot of involvement from the FAF community to get word out about this wonderful client. Casters and forum goers alike are taking their time to spread word about one of the best, and in my opinion
the best, RTS game.
Supreme Commander, as many of you already know, is a grand strategy. It carries close ties to Total Annihilation. You build a base using mass and energy, and using tactics, attempt to best your opponent. There are 3 technology levels, with a 4th 'experimental' one. By Land, Sea, and Air, you'll be fighting your opponents on multiple fronts. The game simulates firing (No Starcraft 1 or 2 tracking shots), and has wonderful graphics. There can be up to 1000s of units at once duking it out on the battlefield.
These features made it unable to be run on most systems in 2007, when it was released. I feel this was bad timing on their part, and so, the community was, and still is, small to this day.
The game was made by Chris Taylor, who also made Tactical Annihilation. He pioneered this kind of RTS.
A year or two ago, the multiplayer client, GPG, was pulled. Now, with technology up ramping, the average computer can run this masterwork RTS, and the community is attempting to make a new multiplayer client and continue support of this game.
FAF Client is made by one man, whose name escapes me. The FAF client is considered by many to be superior to the old GPG one. It's free, automatically updates your game, installs a plethora of mods made by the community, and makes setting up ranked or custom matches easy. Replays are easily assessable, along with a map vault. It can be downloaded
here.
You can obtain the game itself as a hard disk for about $10 on
Amazon, or a virtual copy on
Steam.
Impulse also has one that will work with the client. I don't know for other instances of Forged Alliance, but they should work.
The client is for the stand alone expansion, Forged Alliance, so don't mistakenly buy the original, unless you want to play it for the campaign (which is excellent, by the way).
Some Casts:
My favorite caster, Felixlighta. He's currently doing a community awareness series. This one has TLO, The Little One, in it, who you may know from Starcraft 2, and his brother, The Big One. Both sides make effective use of transports.Another cast from Felixighta, this one shows all 3 theaters of war: land, sea, and air.Finely, this one was casted by another great caster, praisegugleourmaster. This was part of the IMBA Cup II, a tournament ran recently through the client. It's a very tense, close quarters battle.Overall, I've been playing on the client when I have broadband internet (currently running Satellite, which is NOT good for competitive play), and the community is very friendly. Hope to see you guys in some matches!
