Hmm, you have a tummy ache? Excess sanguine humors, you need a bloodletting. A broken arm from the last siege? Probably due to having too much blood, makes the bones brittle, I prescribe a bloodletting. Pregnant, you say? Too much blood makes a baby born without a beard, bloodletting is practically required in cases like this.

It was Hospital -> Dorm beds (back of the hospital beds) -> Chief Medical Dwarf's room.  In the two years he was the CMD I didn't lose anyone, but I did notice two or three folks that were pale or faint.  Apparently, being able to walk out of the room he didn't sleep in and get a snack prevented him from killing folks.  Haven't had a vamp since, so I haven't been able to test further and see if it was the setup, or that particular dwarf vampire's profile that made the difference between what I experienced and the death-ever-quarter everyone else seems to get.

OT: I would have expected the castes to be the cause as well, but I guess not if someone has done !!science!! on it.
