I have a fortress which is doing well. I'm just finishing the tiny pyramid outside, I've got an arena to kill prisoners, but I can't make soap. I have lye and tallow, both outside the soapmakers workshop, but I can't make soap out of them. I built them inside the hospital, if that matters.

are some stockpiles set to give to specific workshops, or some workshops to take only from a certain stockpile, is there any trouble with burrow, did you try to assign it in the workshop or through the manager, are you sure the tallow isn't claimed for cooking meals by a kitchen

You mean inside the hospital zone? Try building it outside the zone and see if that works?

I forbade the kitchens from cooking tallow, the stockpiles are normal, I don't use burrows that much, and It's not that they don't do the job, it's that I can't assign the job.

Are your lye buckets by any chance inside barrels?  If so, make another stockpile for them, that does not accept barrels.

Try ordering the jobs through the job manager (j-m), see if that works.

You can't assign the job? You mean that when you 'q' over the soap maker's workshop the action to make soap is coloured in red?
Or do you mean you can't assign the relevant job to a dwarf?

If you have your books up to date, go into stocks and look where your tallow and lye are, and try to see if there's anything that will prevent it from being used in the soap making. Like someone mentioned above, see if your lye is being stored in barrels in the food stockpiles.

Disable lye from your food stockpile (under misc>liquids), then create a food stockpile that accepts only lye next to your soap maker's workshop.

Make sure that you have tallow (or rock nut oil), and that it is not being cooked, or "TSK"ed to being cooked or moved somewhere.

and if not using a current version, check if the lye buckets have fresh water in them too, it was quite an annoying bug

Chances are your ingredients are flagged to be moved to some stockpile somewhere.  Sometimes a barrel inside of a stockpile is flagged for a dwarf to pick it up and move to where loose ingredients are and put them inside the barrel.

Gee it's hard to make a tallow stockpile, if you don't want fat in it as well. So much typing!
