Hopkins shook his head, placing his hands into his coat pockets. "No... the morgue's containment should be fine if you hurry. I don't know about what's happening with James. James and I were the only ones with radios and now he's gone quiet. We should have been the only ones left after the battery started failing. We couldn't risk contaminating the few who aren't sick. I think the radio must not work or something, because I was expecting him to crack a joke or two over the radio once he got down a floor or two. I'll log in watch a monitor down in Engine Control to see if you reconnected it after I find someone to help. You'll get your credits if you can stop the morgue's containment from breaching." Hopkin's ran past you as he heard the tram roll into the station. He called back hastily. "Good luck!"

You jog on ahead, trying to get there as fast as you can, but it's still a log trip to the battery's room. You lean over the desk in the security station, pressing a button on the side of the desk to open the doors to the sanitation chamber. A dull buzzer sound goes off as a thin gas is sprayed into the room, just as always. After a good minute the doors open, allowing you into the main waiting area. After seeing floating red text you unquestioningly move to the stairwell, immediately diving to the right to type in your pin code, the door agrees with the number and pops open, leading onward into the stairs.

Even with the stairwells it was a good twenty floors down to the bottom and this one only went down the first ten. Not all floors were public, which made it a living hell when the elevators were down. Everyone needed an escort if they needed to go up or down a floor without full clearance. As you reach the door to B10 a crackly voice hit your radio, "Ca... ar me! ...swer ...e!" You try the radio, but the voice doesn't seem to hear you. You run to the next stairwell, hoping that they can hear you when you get closer. With a respectful ding the door pops open and you head down again. After a few more floors you start to hear the voice more clearly. "...say it ...gain. I have a hostage at the ...tom floor. If you can ...me out of here ...can go." You're nearing the door to B20, the last floor of the medical sector. You can see someone who has backed themselves against the back wall. He's holding a plasma cutter that he must have stolen from the surgical wing up to the hostage's throat. Whoever he's holding isn't moving an inch, but you can't tell who it is because of the shadows he's hiding in.

If we can get him out, the hostage can go. Is what I decoded from the fragments.
Has he seen us yet? If not hide and take stock of the situation.
If he has seen us put our hands up at shoulder height with open hands, to show him we haven't got any weapons. then say "Buddy, lets calm down a little and think about this, nobody here wants to get hurt, and you don't want to be imprisoned on Murder Charges."

You try and take a quick peek through the glass to assess the situation. The guy must be about thirty feet from the door, backed up against the receptionist's desk. There isn't any blood on the ground or walls, but the hostage isn't moving. The other is panicking, breathing heavily, and looking from side to side. Your radio squeals painfully, but through the noise a voice is heard and it isn't the man in front of you. "...arge set. ...urning ...ase."

The man hastily grabs his radio, "I heard a fucking echo! Come out! Now!" The signal is clear as day, unlike the other that he just heard. You open the door slowly with your hands up. The door closes behind you. "Don't... move any closer." He's visibly shaking and his finger is on the trigger of the engineering power tool that is powering the plasma cutter.

You stand there about twenty five feet away from him now. "Buddy, lets calm down a little and think about this, nobody here wants to get hurt, and you don't want to be imprisoned on Murder Charges."

The man shouts back, "No... It's a trick. I'm not getting back in. They aren't going to do it again. Everything's fuzzy, but it's there. You can't take that. Not now." He bumps his head on the desk, knocking over a lamp that survives the landing. One of his eyes are bloodshot and is refusing to close properly when he blinks. His eyes start wandering away from you as his hands shake closer to himself, but he lowers it quickly back to the hostage. His eyes are tearing up, although the bulging eye was watering before. "There are too many voices. I don't even know who I'm seeing anymore! Just give me your pin code. Before it gets me. I don't want to die. I can still make this right before it's too late. I can see the flaw now."

He is clearly delusional, sure your code only works in medical, but there is a lot of things he could get in to.

"Let's both stay calm, ok? Panicking doesn't help anyone right now. So, let's just talk about this. What's the problem? What is this flaw you can see? What do you have to fix?"

Casually take a step closer and see how he reacts. If he notices, back up immediately.

And if he reacts aggressively, use a unit or two of MP to erect an energy barrier that's strong enough to resist plasma cutter blasts.

The man just stares at you for a moment with his bulging eye, "You're not one of them, are you? You're not a rock worshiper? It's the Marker. It's all wrong. It's not the like the original. It just makes those things..." He started smile, muttering something under his breath before continuing. "The voices, they're not balanced. The rock composition is off... radiating wrong. If I don't fix it we're all going to die." You casually take a step closer to him. "No... You may not be one of them, but I need out of here. I need to get back to the Marker. Your pin code, then you can have this guy."

You start to notice something... The hostage isn't James. Other than the fact that he's in scrubs you've never seen the man before in medical, which is strange. The man is still stopping you from getting to the battery room though. It's just down the hall and next to the morgue.

Ask him calmly why he needs our pin code, we could be genre savvy and let him fix it but then it would be no fun.

How about we offer to go with him to enter it ourself? That way we can see what he is going on about without just letting him run around unattended.

"It sounds as though there is a serious problem. I would, of course, gladly offer my assistance, but how do I know you're not one of them leading me into a trap? Or that you can do it in time without someone to help do everything below your time?"

Try to go along with him.

You hold your ground, not taking another step forward in case the irrational man in front of you decides to shoot the hostage. It seems as if the only way to make it out of here with both the hostage and the battery intact is to roll with it. You fight back the urge to sound sarcastic for the sake of the hostage. "It sounds as though there is a serious problem. I would, of course, gladly offer my assistance, but how do I know you're not one of them leading me into a trap? Or that you can do it in time without someone to help do everything below your time?" You watch him closely, making sure he doesn't react badly.

He is silent for a minute, almost as if he's weighing the consequences. "...Even if you did help me there's a lot of interference. I can't radio you if I need help the way it is now. If you're really going to help me I'll be waiting by that door." He points at the door behind you shakily with his plasma cutter. "Until you get the door open don't... touch me." He stands up, barely managing to drag the unconscious hostage along with him towards the door. His aim at the hostage's throat doesn't falter.

"I have to reconnect the battery in the back room. I'll be back in a second." You run on ahead. The battery room is only a hallway away now. A red timer is counting down above the morgue's door that's on your right as you run past. It's showing "00:01:42 remaining until emergency power failure" flashing in bold red text. The metal door to the battery room looks like it was forced open, and a quick glance inside tells you that the wires have been cut recently, and the plasma burns confirm your fears. It was a plasma cutter. The cut sections of wires now hang on the wall with a clean slice through them, still supported by large industrial restraints. Sparks are jumping from most of the wires with the exception of the one section which the cutter missed that must now be attempting to do the job of all 4 sections.

What do you want to do about the situation?

Your skill in cybernetics gives you at least a basic knowledge in how to connect and reconnect wires, and fix broken machinery to an extent.

Look around for tools, and see if you can connect the wiring before the TIMER finishes and power fails.
