Wheres all the ore!
« on: June 25, 2012, 08:51:52 pm »

My miners have been searching for a long time and not a single ore has been pulled out of the ground, ive somewhat thoroughly searched the siltstone layer on the top and now im starting on the marble and granite down in the deepness but theres not much before you hit a warm stone. My military is quite underpowered as a result!

use reveal if not already done, if horrible results are shown or prospect gives bad results if you dont want to look yourself. Do as above.

750 is good enough. Make a new world with advanced parameters to alter ore scarcity.

And that is the story of how napalm was invented.

Apart from hacking and semi-hacking, simply pay more attention when you're picking a spot to embark. As a general rule, you don't want to be any place that doesn't have
Shallow metalS
Deep metalS
Flux stone
The presence of an Aquifer also tends to be a pain in the ass, at least if it covers most/all of your embark area.

The thing to do is probably to use DFHack "Prospect All" function, this will tell you what ores exist in the current, or a prospective, embark. "Reveal" can be used to show where the ore is.
Of course this is cheating, but you can imagine the dwarves have some kind of "ore sense", much like oil prospectors somehow know if oil is miles underground (except with less magic and more technology).

You can get all-ore layers with modding, but giving metals the tags , e.g. [METAMORPHIC] etc and removing non-ore stones from the game, so your all-candy, gold and platinum worlds are possible

The all important ore hematite appears in igneous stone layers while siltstone appears in
sedimentary layers and marble is metamorphic.

Heametite appears in both igneous extrusive (not intrusive) and sedimentary layers. Searching in sedimentary layers such as siltstone is your best bet for finding ores as the majority of them occur there.

Shouldn't be able to set scarcity below 100.

Sorry.

Time to mod in all ore layers but make them more rare than veins.

Good lord. This is not helpful. Hematite appears primarily in sedimentary layers, LIKE ALL IRON ORE. It is the ONLY iron ore that EVER appears in igneous layers, and it only appears infrequently, and only in igneous extrusive layers. I'm guessing you only embark on volcanoes?
