A Siren's Adventure
« on: June 25, 2012, 01:24:52 pm »

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

You stand in the early morning surf as the waves caress your ankles. The air is rife with blood and brine, and you are alone. Truly alone. The local human village had finally grown tired of your tribe eating it's fishermen, and had hired a band of mercenaries to kill you all off.

You are the only survivor... if you can call what happened to you survival. Your songbox was ripped out and you were left for dead. Luckily you were in crawling distance of the potion chest, but unluckily not even the strongest healing potion available could restore the organ that granted charming magic to your singing voice. Are you even fit to call yourself a Siren with a disability like that?

A scream interrupts your brooding. You snap to attention and trace it to a pile of corpses... one of which happens to be moving. The survivor is restored with a healing potion, and although you are glad that one of your sisters made survived the massacre, you secretly wish that it had been somebody more useful.

Alright. We have a tie in the biomes and companion categories. Once those are broken we can go, but feel free to keep suggesting names and skills.

I'll also vote A. Otherwise, I endorse Ukranian Ranger's character.

Great. Of all people it had to by Sunny that survived. Not only did you lose your voice, but you are now responsible for the wonder child who will surely rub her own ability in your face.

You swallow your angst and tell the girl to wait in the old ritual cave while you scour the village for survivors and travel supplies. You cannot stay here, the human villagers will surely come and loot this place as soon as the mercenaries report back to them, and there is no way in hell you and Sunfish could take a whole mob of looters on your own.

Sadly you find no other survivors. The butchers of your people were nothing if not through. You do however take as much from the village as you can carry in a sack. You take the last of the potions from the potion chest, some rations, fresh clothes for Sunfish and yourself, and various tools and trinkets to use and/or trade for survival.

You note that the mercenary who fell you must have taken your sword as a trophy, as it is nowhere to be found. Knowing that you were the villages only swords woman you resort to grabbing a large quiver of Javelins with which to defend yourself. Briefly forgetting that Sunfish would be more likely to hurt herself than her attacker with a weapon you grab a large knife that the kid could use.

Arriving in the cave you help Sunfish change into clothes that are not bloodstained and punctured, and explain that the two of you must now leave the village, never to return.

"Mommy sleep in pile outside. No leave without mommy!" The girl protests.

Not wanting to explain the concept of death to a mentally challenged child you convince her that her mother will wake up later and catch up. With that you gaze upon your tribal home and slain family one last time, before setting out for the only other safe place you know of: A nearby orcish camp.

As you travel you know a choice awaits you; You could follow the coast or take an inland route. The inland route would be quicker, however a Siren has far more options in combat if water is close at hand.

Alot of them are somewhat self explanitory. I'll give a full magic system rundown once you get into a combat situation.

You decide to take the coastal route. It may take a bit longer, but as far as you can tell you are not on a schedule, and a Siren with access to water is a Siren with options should the shit hit the fan.

The frozen wilderness is quiet. In these last few weeks of winter before the brief thaw life is on its last legs, pleading with the world in which it exists to let it squat for yet another day. To your people, you think poetically, the world had whispered back a stern and bloody 'no'.

Even Sunfish, who cannot understand the situation, feels it's gravity and partakes of the mournful still. She remains mute for several hours, much to the benefit of your brooding.

Chattering. The silence of winter in death is broken by speech. Speech in common. Human sounding speech in common. You look up from your feet, which have been occupying your eyes, to see a human fishing party. They stare in awe and fear of you, and you as well contemplate them with at the least caution.

You doubt these humans carry arms or magic any more threatening than knives and nets. If you had your blade and your voice you would not think twice of slaughtering them all. Even if you didn't suspect that they were from the village that did you wrong, no Siren worth her salt would pass up the chance to feast on the sweet flesh and organs of game most dangerous.

That said, you haven't handled a Javelin in battle before. You were okay in throwing contests for sport with you family and tribe, but you are not eager to see how that translates into a kill or be killed situation.

There is also the matter of Sunfish. The girl possess the basic Siren ability to enthrall male beings, as well as empower her allies with song. The spell that makes her famous however is the song of simplicity, which reduces all non-siren listeners to Sunny's own cognitive level. You recall whispers around the village that Sunny had other spellsongs as well; verbal magic too dangerous to use around her own people. Perhaps the spirits would guide her to use one of them if you ask her too, but you have know idea what they do. You note that Spellsongs take some time to kick in, and that she would become a priority target the second she opened her mouth. You are not sure your healing magic can keep up with five knife wielding humans.

As you weigh your options you note the humans seem to be psyching themselves up for battle. They are too tightly bundled in winter clothes for you to discern their gender. The rocky beach here is slippery, impeding safe movement. The nearby water could make for a simple escape. You look to Sunfish and find the girl beaming a bright smile. You hope that the girl will defend herself if need be, but cannot waste time explaining the situation to her. If you wish to strike the first blow or even talk the humans down, your moment is now.

Can we get a better idea of what we look like? Do we have wings? Can we fly? Do we look like harpies, or mermaids, naga, or humans? Sirens are very different creatures depending on your source. You mentioned ankles earlier so I assume we don't look like mermaids or naga. But then, you have made a point of mentioning how the water is safe for us, so I'm guessing we're not winged flyers. But if we have ankles not a tail, why are is the water safe? Are we able to shapeshift to human/mermaid forms? Does that mean right now we're indistinguishable from humans? Or do we have green skin and scales?

What are we?
