Free Tycoon Games
« on: June 24, 2012, 09:18:22 pm »

I loved the old zoo tycoon games, roller coaster tycoon, etc. Anything where you build some sort of business or institution to make as much money as possible. I don't have a lot of cash available at the moment, so does anyone know of free games of that sort?

Openttd is very good. It is basically a remake of an old transport tycoon game. It's still getting updated too.

Simutrans is deeper than OpenTTD and as such a bit less accessible.

http://www.capitalism-online.com

Browser-based but it's a free fun business sim tycoon-ish game. We've got a handful of B12 players on there who are active. Check out the thread on the B12 "Other Games" board for "Economies of Scale" (that's the name of the game when it was in beta). The new server just started on 6/1.

Simutrans is deeper than OpenTTD and as such a bit less accessible.

More like painfully inaccessible compared to OpenTTD.  For a game that's supposed to be about railroads at its core, it's surprisingly obtuse on helping you build a working one.  You'll build what would appear to be a functioning rail-line, and get a mysterious "can't find a route" error... no further in-game elaboration.

Furthmore, both in-game and community documentation for Simutrans tends droll on about random features but gloss over the basics:

http://docs.simutrans.com/download/simutrans_guide.pdf

OpenTTD also has all sorts of n00b friendly toggle-options like collisions, auto-signalling, or end-of-track 180's.  Simutrans is just pure hardcore, but doesn't really tell you that it is, and sure as hell doesn't let you switch to n00b mode.

It's a gorgeous engine with great modability, but other than that, I can't see why someone would play Simutrans over OpenTTD.

Because its production chains are much more advanced and in depth, its passenger/mail system is based on destinations goals rather than treating passengers like any other commodity, which provide with the option to have a connection stops for passengers. it has a full underground system so you don't have to build straight tunnels and you can have underground stations. it has customizeable airports, which may be harder to build at first, but provide more freedom in their placement. it has a line system, instead of having to clone/share vehicles you want to serve the same destinations.

It took me a few tries before it finally clicked with me as opposed to the instant awe inspiration of TTD/OpenTTD, but ever since it did, i just cant return to OpenTTD.

Yet Another Cargo Dest mod for ottd solves the cargo destination problem. You can set it up so all industries require destinations, or just passengers/mail. That along with Extended Cargo Scheme newGRFs solves the simple industries problem.

The Theme games actually came first I believe but yes... Tycoons and Theme games are the same thing in essence. Same with a few "Sim" games (like Simtower)

Isn't that mod a year old?

You're good, every time I ask about Tycoon games, people show up with facebook games.  :P
