Simutrans seems to require a lot of micromanagement. I built a large system than involved fetching oil from an off-shore platform and a large distance over land and other needed infrastructure to produce books I then took to a book store. When it all was done, I had a lot of debt but I was making big profit. Then, everything fell apart because I didn't transport paper fast enough.

OpenTTD is not really about money - there is no challenge here, even with mods. The really interesting here is construction: realistic/efficient/the fastest/done by your AI.

I know nothing about FIG, but openTTD is great game - but I am not sure is it really this type that OP wanted.
