So.Much.Gold But is it magma safe?
« on: June 24, 2012, 07:30:24 am »

Basically I made a gold anvil from some dude with a mood. But I'm already at my magma stage and using magma forges. Infact, I forgoed the whole use of charcoal, haha. Oh yeah so to the question, is gold magma safe?

I dont think that the anvil has to be magma-safe tough.
Screw pumps can be made with a wooden screw, and still pump magma.
I think you're good.

I read i the wiki once that the anvil has to be magma-safe. Don't know if it's true tho.

The anvil indeed must be magma-safe in order to use it in a magma forge - an artifact gold anvil can only be used in a standard metalsmith's forge.

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

perhaps....
not for long though. They catch on fire after a few moments operation and then de-construct a little bit later.

I was under the impression that Artifacts are indestructible. They certainly can't be taken down by building destroyers. I would guess that they're magma-safe too.

Actually, that's totally irrelevant - artifacts are only immune to wear (from building destroyers or from being set on fire), but if you heat them up enough they will almost definitely melt.

Furthermore, constructing a magma forge literally requires a "magma-safe anvil", and anvils aren't magma-safe unless they're "stable" at a temperature of 12000 (i.e. colddam point is lower, all other temperature points are higher) - gold's melting point is 11915, which means you cannot make a magma forge using a gold anvil (i.e. it won't even appear in the build menu). A normal metalsmith's forge, on the other hand, only requires a "fire-safe anvil" which only needs stability at a temperature of 11000.

Consider yourself lucky that you didn't end up with a zinc anvil - those aren't even fire-safe, so it wouldn't even be possible to use them in a metalsmith's forge.

Hmm, that's the sort of thing that would have me force the dwarf to stand under a bridge, or mine out a volcano's obsidian tile with no where to escape to or some other form of death.

I once had a zinc breastplate. If the forger hadnt been legendary armorsmith by then I'd have made him cavern exploration team 1 solo

You could use the gold anvil to make a regular forge and use that for studding metals, which if I remember correctly does not use fuel.
