What's your favorite sound format?
« on: June 24, 2012, 04:23:24 am »

.wav - Waveform Audio File Format. Pretty much raw sound in digital data format.

.mp3 - The well known music playing format. Getting kinda old, but its widespread compatibility with pretty much everything still keeps it useful.

.ogg - Ogg Vorbis. Lossy format that I see used often in games since its free.

.wma - Windows Media Audio. Audio compression made by Microsoft. Can undergo both lossy and lossless encoding.

.midi - Musical Instrument Digital Interface. Different from the other formats in that .midi files are like music notes from electrical instruments rather than sound waves in the air.

.flac - Free Lossless Audio Codec. Lossless like .wav, but with a bit of compression for smaller size.

.mpeg - MPEG-4. I usually see it used for encoding video, although music alone works too.

.aac - Advanced Audio Coding. Don't know much about this one. Said to be the successor of the .mp3 format.

I personally like .oggs since  I find them often in game files and they seem to have slightly better sound quality than .mp3 files.

1st place .wav - I like it because it's sound, condensed to its purest form.

2nd place .mp3 - Compatible with almost anything, and sounding quite good, why would this not be in my list?

3rd place .midi - If in case I want my keyboard to play a song, or just fiddle around with importing them into FL Studio.

Bonus .mpeg - I don't quite like this, except when it's used as a video file, for compression reasons.

.ogg. Small filesize (compared to mp3), free, and no loss of quality to my ears (compared to mp3).

Quote from: Chesterton
For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

Cockatoo-induced tinnitus and a lack of ranks in Listen does that.

1. MP3 - Sheer compatibility keeps it in my no. 1.

2. FLAC - Such great quality, and smaller than WAV.

3. MIDI - I hold a soft spot for MIDI files. I used to use them in place of MP3s back when we had dialup when I was a kid - a 50kb MIDI could sound more or less the same as a poor quality 800kb (64kbps) mp3.

I tend to find that it depends on where I'm listening. If I'm just listening to the music through my laptop or with headphones then I usually stick to mp3 since it sounds virtually identical to WAV through them. If I'm on the stereo system at home (which is better then some movie theaters due to my dad working as a professional sound man :P) then WAV and FLAC all of the way!

FLAC is my favorite.
I keep most of my music in MP3 format because (at 320kbps), there's not much difference for most music, and it's significantly smaller.
FLAC vs MP3 basically depends on how much I care about the particular music files. FLAC is still my favorite, though.

MP3 is the one I use most, because it's the only format my music player can handle, but for most things prefer OGG.
