34.11 hauling issue
« on: June 23, 2012, 08:25:50 pm »

Hi I just had a question about the way dwarves haul in 34.11, since i just got the new version. The particular situation that I noticed it was when I repeatedly got messages saying that my farmers canceled planting seeds due to not having seeds, even though my stocks clearly indicated 60+ seeds. After awhile I noticed that a dwarf would pick up the entire container for the seeds just to store one seed. So when my farmers went to grab seeds they couldn't cause someone was taking all the seeds around with them just to store one seed. So my question is: Is there anyway to change/avoid that or is it working as intended? Cause if it is intentional...that's super lame.

Best work around is to reduce or prohibit the use of barrels in the seed stockpile.  They will use bags still, from what I understand, which means there should be another bag for him the use unless the one that was picked up was the only one with the specific seeds he wants.

Sweet, thanks for the quick response. Yea it sounds like that will help, I'll have to try it out. Though I'am guessing it won't solve the problem completely, but still tyvm.

Same is true for cloth and stuff. Do not allow bins for the stockpiles or don't use them at all in the first place. I got annoyed by cancelled joblists because of someone again took the bin that had the stuff used by the clothier. So from now on: the loom will get cluttered in the end, but I don't care, since the clothier will be right next to it, using it as raw cloth storage.

There's still quite some optimization required, like a bin full with serrated disks is hauled through half the fortress, blocking my engineers from continued work on the traps, just to put in another serrated disc and move it back again. This took at least 5 times as long as if he would have picked up the single disk and moved it. But well, what do we have hauling slaves lovely dwarfs for.

Well, there is already a bug report on this, so hopefully its something Toady will work on relatively soon.

Just watched my broker go to the above-ground farm-plot, stand on the mature rope reeds, then decide to go to the brewery, pick up a barrel, go back to the farm plot, put the one mature plant in the barrel and carry the barrel back to the brewery.
In the meantime, another plant matured and another dorf repeated this procedure.

I'm thinking of making subordinate stockpiles around the farms to try to speed up this behaviour - has anyone done this and is it successful/worthwhile?

close pile without barrels that gives to the one that uses barrels? that could work.  especially if you enable wheelbarrows on one or both, which will limit how many haulers are tasked at any one time.

Yea its pretty frustrating, especially since it was fine before when they just brought each individual item to the pile. I've been testing different solutions with multiple stockpiles and limiting the containers therein. So far its helped somewhat, though I'am hoping what krenshala said about the bug report is true and gets changed in the near future.

It's the best way that I've found so far. Just have a close stockpile that doesn't accept barrels/bins, then the "actual" stockpile farther away that takes form the first stockpile and permits barrels/bins. I use that setup for almost all of my headache inducing stockpiles.

That fix works for so many things (plant harvesting, etc).

No-Barrel Stockpile that takes from anywhere -> Takes-Barrels Stockpile that only takes from links, which then feeds a stockpile specifically used by the workshop.  The No-Barrel and Takes-Only-From-Links stockpiles can just be two halves of what used to be a single stockpile.

But AFAIK, wheelbarrows are only useful for stone stockpiles.  Not sure they're very useful for most of the other stockpiles.

The barrel using stockpile needs to be linked to a stockpile that can provide it barrels for some reason.

Same goes for bins for other types of stockpiles.

For extra amusement, I've got a couple of haulers trudging all over the real estate dragging a bin while they collect all the arrows and bolts fired during hunting/trader defence.

The amusement?  I've only built lead bins.....It takes them forever to collect just one bolt/arrow.

Wheelbarrows are also good for heavy furniture items, such as those *gold cabinets*.

Oh yes, I have noticed this.  I'm working on a quick fort to test a new housing block scheme, and I'm trying to make windows.  So I've got a small stockpile for charcoal/coke next to my glassmaker's forge, but whenever he grabs some fuel out of the bin, some idiot hauler thinks "OOh, he needs more fuel", and grabs the bin even though there's 4 more bars in it.  So the glassmaker keeps spamming the hell out of job cancellations, and it's annoying as hell.
