What do you mean? It has been dark since the beginning given its mars and all, sarcasm aside the first real battle involved brainwashing humans / biobombing them.

Well... That's it exactly. The whole brainwashing, and selective breeding part didn't need to happen, did it? This isn't Enders Game, this is

[Expect the update today/tomorrow. The selective breeding thing is actually my being far, far too lazy to keep with Mendelian genetics.

Also, it's a game with an amoral group of psychic space wasps and their highly adaptive swamp plants versus the overpopulated human corporate stratocracy. I don't think this game can be light. ]

[This is part one of several updates. Go on and comment if you like; I'll be writing more throughout the day.]

A day passes as preparations are made. You-as-the-Tech-Queen collect certain vital fluids needed for reproduction, and set about improving the process. The goal, of course, is to have an industry. While we can currently have successful raids, there are hundreds of millions of humans and a whole planet to conquer. Hit and run with a single hive? Unthinkable. Said process takes the better portion of the day, while You-as-War-Queen and the Tech Drone work on ensuring full preparation for the raid. Come next morning, a specialized mini-fleet of M-Scouts heads out towards the mineral crawler; an over-flight consisting of a Commander, Stampy, and a complement of Human and Kai soldiers rockets towards that dome city, preceded by further scouts. At the same time, a ground-based assault with the other Commander sets out towards the secondary.

The M-Scouts quickly locate the position of the crawler, and attempt to begin hacking into the massive machine through the communications relay. Stampy, however, was completely correct - it's impossible. The communications are literally not plugged into the computers. Even with power flowing through it, it is of no use. After a short period of retrying, the M-Scouts land near the rear of the crawler, and begin to carve their way through. We note this with distaste, load an aircraft with an armored Human Soldier and a Kai Drone, and sent it out to return the machine home after the killing of the humans aboard.

In the meantime, however, the main aircraft touches down on the air strip outside the dome town; after a brief taxi into the dome proper, a pair of officials approach the ship, looking rather confused. The back opens to reveal Stampy, who shoots the two. At the same time, the town's power generation shuts down completely as the Navigation Drones work the system; the remainder of the force offloads. They proceed through the town by quadrant as M-Scouts fly within, occasionally shooting pockets of resistance. More than one are shot down in the process, but between the ground and air forces, resistance is mopped up within a half hour. Damage to the town is moderate, as are casualties.

The second aircraft lands atop the crawler, and the Human proceeds in cautiously. After a few moments, the data is uploaded to the Human: the remainder of the crew is holed up in the control room. The current M-Scouts are immobilized, aside from the two without laser cutters. After several minutes of communications, the order is given to reconnect the uplink via bypass. The Human does a reasonable job of it, and shortly after it is done, Our hacking starts the crawler back up and sends it back home. The Human, in the meantime, takes the opportunity to consult with Main Hive, and begins to work on re-routing the ventilation system to flood the control room with carbon monoxide. Before doing so, however, the Human insists on access to the voice system. We grant it, out of curiosity, and listen to the Human demand surrender. Nothing happens, and with a sound of unhappiness, the Human sets about her work.

The ground assault arrives. Unfortunately, it would appear that someone in the previous town had managed to send a message before power was cut: this town has erected a makeshift barricade, and has active reserves. The attack proceeds anyway, and works out well in Our favor until the tanks roll out. The first pair of shots take out most of Our soldiers; the battle shifts towards the Humans as they seek the remaining Kai. They pay heavily in blood for it, and unfortunately manage to delay Our action long enough for several getaway vehicles containing Human Drones to get away. Many are destroyed, but there is only so many M-Scouts left: several vehicles manage to leave the battlespace. As the tide shifts yet again, there is a ripple of movement through the Human lines. Many go on their knees and say something brief. As We attempt to listen, there is a sudden flash of light, the beginnings of an explosion, then silence. Human satellite information reveals that the town is gone; only a smoking crater remains. The damage is, however, consistent with many other towns that have chosen to die free as opposed to living as slaves.

In the meantime, Stampy and his soldiers appear to be sorting out the Human prisoners, of which there is a considerable amount. After eating something concealed in his armor, which looks rather like a human sucrose bar, Stampy completely removes his helmet and lays down, eyes dilating. You sense a sudden spike in Stampy's presence, and command the nearest Soldier to inspect the sucrose bar. You are surprised to find that it is Royal Jelly covered in chocolate, and switch to the Commander to oversee the matter personally. You communicate your anger towards Stampy loudly, and several Humans nearby slump to the ground, bleeding. Stampy doesn't seem to notice, but after a short time, conveys the Human phrase "It is better to beg for forgiveness than to ask for permission" in a much clearer Voice than before. After a brief discussion over what "forgiveness" means, You decide to spare Stampy's life in order to continue the Human expiriment, but suggest to him that this "forgiveness" concept will not apply again. After growing pale, Stampy assents, and begins to sort out the Human prisoners, yelling orders.

Unsurprisingly, most of the Humans refuse to join Us; out of that group, You cull the old and weak, sparing the young and all in good physical condition. Roughly a third of the population attempts to join Us, and are presented before Stampy, who forces them to look him in the eye, express their reasoning, and proclaim loyalty to Us. Occasionally, Stampy shakes his head, and sends the humans to stand against a wall. After the first two rounds of shootings, several people leave the recruitment line and join the slaves. This process repeats for hours, but fully a quarter of the surviving Human population willingly chooses to serve Our purposes. A second aircraft is sent, loaded with Drones and equipment. The Human aboard the crawler continues her attempts to negotiate with the Humans in the control room, but after several hours of silence punctuated by taunts, the Human simply gives up, starts up the engine, and leaves the room, sealing it behind her as she waits.

The aircraft arrives and offloads; the loyal Humans enter both crafts and return to the Hive as the Commader and Our drones set about repairing the damage and integrating the Human slave-hive into Our purposes.  With two successful raids, We turn our attention towards building our resources to the fullest extent possible. We cannot wage a true war without an economy, after all.

"...patients appear to have suffered greatly from the pirates."

"No kidding. Giant bugs? What the hell did those bastards DO to these people?"

"I'm no shrink. They're currently sedated and given a healthy dose of antipsychotics, so whenever they wake up Psych'll have to talk to them."

Silence.

"Those burns... you saw them, right?"

"Energy weapons. What the hell kind of pirate brings a damn laser tank to raid a little place like that?"

"Dead ones."

A wolfish grin. The other doctor simply nodded, and the two continued to sit and drink coffee in silence.

Never underestimate the power of denial.

Though I do find it worrying that even small human settlements have a selfdestruct device. Probably some sort of airburst bomb made from fuel and liquid oxygen.

[If it sounds like what you want, then it is what you got. :P

I am not doing the numbers and inventory yet, but assume that about a thousand Kai are with the War Queen. The remaining half are distributed among the sub-hives, with the Main Hive taking the majority. Assume the game is on, and working just as before: suggest for the overall Kai efforts.

If you're taking up a Commander, post your four day-actions as well. As in, you still make suggestions; you just have your own subhive that is semi-autonomous.]

Flowers grow. More of Us are added to the Purpose. After several days, the appropriate humans have been selected from out of the slave caste and allowed virtual freedom - specifically, families of the Human Loyalists. With the aid of the Digging Drones, the Human Containment Lab is greatly expanded, and a high-speed underground rail transit system is built between the town and the Human Hive. There is, at one point, a brief complication when Administration pilots touch down and examine the town; after various Loyalists tell the story involving pirates with laser tanks, the Administration flies off. Later in the day, a news team comes by and seems eager to poke around; a few well-timed demolition charges put a damper on the activity. While We manage to remain hidden for the day, it costs most of the labor of the day. Finally, the news leaves; we wait until nightfall to begin again.

More time passes, and the Human Hive is expanded to include a pilot simulator and medical facilities. Our Queens produce offspring, as do the commanders and Nurse. These grow quickly into further Commanders, and one of them is selected to become the Body Queen. It is placed behind a multiple-control lock and surrounded by friendly Commanders, all monitoring her for signs of rebellion and wiping her control of her offspring before letting Our newly born soldiers through. Further Commanders attend to the Queens, strengthening Our resolve and Our mind. The Tech Queen, throught the whole time, expands and produces more machinery, allowing for more and more production of Our technological advances. The War Queen drills with the Predators, while new air carriers take overland flights to new Subhives. The War Queen leaves second, taking a large force with her. This flight itself goes far to the East, and the Queen quickly burrows in and unloads. For various reasons, the East theater is the most likely theatre of battle to see heavy fighting come Invasion Day; hundreds of Kai go along with her in staggered flights. Other flights keep heading out with commanders.

One heads due north, aiming to expand in ores and, more importantly, water. This particular area, while somewhat heavy with Human construction, is entirely automated, and lacks the particular setup of sensors that would normally inhibit such a plan. Very few forces are sent with this Commander, as well as only a token amount of Human Slaves.

Another heads to the town and begins to create a hive somewhere south of it. Naturally, this Commander is given the largest amount of Human Loyalists. It does, however, get a healthy complement of Soldiers, as well as a large stockpile of parts, quite a few Tech Drones, and more Nurses than are likely needed.

This pattern repeats itself in the East hive in the remains of the exploded Human town, with a smaller number of Human Loyalists, the second largest group of Human Slaves, and some Mind Flayers. They are further given a large amount of resources with which to rebuild the human town.

The West Hive is located further towards the large volcanos on Mars, and is positioned in the area that is projected to have the most minerals and geologic stability. It is intended to act as a backup strategic command should other Hives fall, and is located deep, deep within. The Humans know this area as "Ascraeus Mons."

Each of these Commanders has been given several doses of Royal Jelly to allow "independent" thought, and each is given a force of near fifty Drones, a small force of soldiers, more Predators than is rational, and an additional group of five TN Commanders for breeding and command purposes - sixty Eggs per cycle.  The Hivemind, however, remains open to Our suggestions for the Main Hive and the actions of the majority of Us with the War Queen. And, naturally, to guide the actions of Commanders who have yet to manifest a "personality."

It is Day 41. The sat-killer attack commences in twenty-four hours.

By all means. The far South hive is... special. That's why I didn't post about it yet, by the way. It's not just DM being inconsistent. If you want that one, just let me know and I will send you the details. It is the southern front.

EDIT: Stampy and the Loyalists (which sounds like an awesome British rock band name, by the way) chose to work with the Kai. Given that the best possible outcome of that is to be somewhere between "pet" and "work animal", I guess I would have to agree that it's a pretty crapsack world to even be taking that chance.

You know it'd happen, though.

A specialised breeding drone with a greater capacity for adaptability, perhaps the ability to acquire traits later in its development, and ideally some egg-laying capacity, might enhance our ability to develop new strains for the body queen to refine.
Some discussion as to the goals of our development may be advantageous. Several possible desired strains follow:
: Manual: For maintaining the hives: Adaptable manipulators and low energy use.
: Intellectual: To enhance our mental abilities: Enhanced intelligence and versatile senses.
: Monitors: Observation, primarily of hostile elements: Sensory evasion and intense senses.
: Formal combat: To engage in overt military activity: Resilience and swift senses.

P.S.
Do the independent ones choose their destinations?

P.P.S.
Though I do find it worrying that even small human settlements have a selfdestruct device. Probably some sort of airburst bomb made from fuel and liquid oxygen.
Any energy source can be put to destructive ends, they likely retasked their main power supply...

As I will roleplay part of hivemind that is highly interested in integrating humans, I really want Biped line with progression like this

1) Kai that are very close to standard Kai's but have four limbs (first step)
2) Kai that have similar size to humans and vaguely same form. (It's useful to have drones that can use equipment designed for human use and live in chambers created for humans)
3) Kai that look very similar to humans, especially in some kind of spacesuit (Useful for infitration)
4) Kai that can speak as human, eat human food and look exactly as human, unless tested by medical equipment  (more infiltration options, loyalist control)
5) Kai that can mate with humans (Yes, I do think that integrating Human DNA will benefit us)

Ascraeus Mons hive:
>>:Have our drones dig out a quick hollow cavern which will link to all chambers.
>>:Begin digging chambers and auxiliary tunnels within those chambers to the magma tubes, sacrifice only the lowliest of drones if required.
>>:Meanwhile have our soldiers take positions around the entrance and keep US safe from the human threat.

TODO LIST: Establish geothermal power generation for the hives of this world. Experiment with !!MAGMA!! science. Develop high-class technology for the greater good of KAI!

Not really, neither a fission nor fusion reactor can reliably create such an explosion in a short timeframe, and for a combustion system it mostly depends on the amount of fuel they have. So yeah, I assume they blew up their oxygen generator + fuel storage, which would have created a firestorm/ airburst explosion which then popped the dome.

We don't even use Dna, as far as I know. It's also not really practical or usefull. Time for the Kai inquisition

Anyway, for my sub hive:

-L2 Tech/pilot drone
-5 TN, Ts, TB, TW, Tp, commanders (If I can not differentiate due to organisatorial manners, all TN)

Preparations are made throughout the day. A pair of BN Nurse Larvae are segregated from the Stasis Chamber and sent down the line towards the commander known as RAM, as well as T, s, and P-line reproductive fluids, two Units of Royal Jelly, and various pre-constructed parts for a biology lab.

Zecro, as to be expected, has most of the Digging Drones, and quickly herds the Kai into the rapidly expanding underground tunnel system. The Kai are, perhaps, rather lucky to find a series of pre-existing tubes and tunnels, and an appropriate multi-layered defense system is designed. There is a brief consultation on Human finding information, and several sudden drops, challenging climbs, and other obstacles are added, as well as foundations for blast doors and the like. Zecro and other drones, meanwhile, work on power generation, and setting up the Command Chamber.

Ukrainian Ranger spends little time on construction, instead turning attention to the Human population. Having an ample supply of Human reproductive cells, and several Human Nurse Drones, the Kai and Loyalists enter the Human Medical Facility and fertilize many Human and Kai cells (mostly with Stampy's reproductive fluids, given his usefulness). Given the current failure of the last attempt, it is assumed that the most likely option of success is a Kai/Human chimera.

Any overall suggestions? 10ebbor10, any specific actions?  By the way, you're absolutely correct on the explosion.
