Ugh, I have a syndrome--ALREADY SAW A DOCTOR
« on: June 22, 2012, 05:23:35 pm »

I haven't been able to eat decently for days, and no one knows what is causing it.  On the plus side, I've lost 5 pounds, and I can certainly afford that.  I'm getting unhappy thoughts from the BRAT (bananas, rice, applesauce, toast) diet and Gatorade, let me tell you.

What are your favorite things to eat when you have stomach virus/unknown reason for stomach issues?

EDIT:  I wasn't clear.  I did see my doctor.

That goes in with my "No one can figure it out" statement.  They're all like "Dunno, stress maybe?  Follow this diet, kthnxbai."

EDIT 2:  Never mind.  This was stupid.  I'm just grumpy.

Don't be silly, the internet is the only reliable place to turn when in need of medical advice.

Already saw the doctor, thanks for assuming.

I'd imagine they said more than that. Have you followed this diet kthnxbai?

Also, go for the diet they suggested rather than asking us what to eat.

Yeah, stupid of me.  I'm done here.  Thanks for not bashing me too badly, everyone.

Yes, he totally has lockjaw, a condition now so rare that there are only 50 cases in the US every year.

Its kinda funny that we've gotten to the point where ALREADY SAW A DOCTOR has to be in the thread title for this kinda thing.

I'm actually a bit confused by all of the sarcasm directed at the OP. She plainly stated that she was just looking for suggestions about food that won't upset her stomach, not for medicinal advice.

My girlfriend has a lot of stomach problems, and doctors have been completely unhelpful in solving them. We've found that it's best for her to avoid greasy/fried food, spicy stuff, and anything overly processed. Try eating fresh fruits/veggies, simple foods, and avoid tons of complex carbs. You can always start narrowing it down once you've established what you can eat.

Personal suggestion, try sticking to just water. Maybe some sort of fruit juice. Gatoraid does me no favors when my stomach's deciding to not cooperate. If nothing else, it tends to have a lot of sugar in it, which can cause problems depending on what's going on. OTOH, I've had pretty good luck with apple juice while food poisoned and unable to keep anything down, so it might be something besides the sugar.

As for eating, BRAT does alright... try varying up the recipe on the rice and toast if the sameness is annoying. Might also try different kinds of rice -- I have a bit better luck with somewhat dryer than normal brown when I'm ill, ferex.

Alternately, try similar foods (other grains, other fruits) and see what you can keep down. Me, I tend to fall back on very simple diet (mostly grain and not much else) when food's not playing nice... stuff that's not too fancy and that I eat regularly anyway. Maybe cut back on seasonings until you find the sweet spot. I find that habitual foods (staple stuff I eat at a majority of meals) tend to be more likely to stay down than ones I'm not very used to eating, basically.
