Transferral of a save
« on: June 21, 2012, 01:38:35 pm »

I have a wonderful fort on the computer that I am currently using, and I would like to transfer said fort to a separate computer. The two are not on a network together and I have no current access to a flash drive. What are some ways that I could gain access to this fort on the new computer?

Zip the region folder the fort is in, upload to a file host (like dropbox, DFFD etc.), download with the other computer and unzip it and stick the region fodler in your 'save' folder.

ninja'd. How full is too full? how large is the folder?

Break up the files in the folder into smaller chunks, zip them up, email them.

Go into the source code, write it all down with a pen and paper, and then when you're done sometime next year you can just put it into a Dwarf Fortress folder on the new computer. Hey, you didn't ask for good ideas.  :P

Zip and split the zips. Use floppy's. It's the only way.

I'd work on gaining access to a flash drive. it's not like they're terribly expensive.

Have them killed. Nothing solves a problem quite as effectively as simply having it killed.

Didn't know about DFFD, I'll be using that, I think.

True, and this might be the dwarfiest option presented.

The dorfiest method would be to stick your +serrated silicon hard drive+ in a minecart, push it down a flight of stairs at the mailman, and bait him back to the other computer with a trail of kittens after he goes beserk with it embedded in his skull.

Are you trying to copy the entire DF directory, or just the region for your current game (<DF dir>/data/save/<region dir>)?

I'd say either DFFD or just break the region folder into two pieces, zip them up, and send them separately through email.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

I'd be shocked if dwarves didn't eat the demons they killed. After all, if they're willing to eat a poison spewing monstrosity, why not a flying dinosaur thing that hates all life?
