Total War Discussion Thread
« on: June 21, 2012, 05:27:39 am »

A thread for every single game they've ever created.  Tell your campaigns, online battles, comments, and more!

For me, I've been having an...interesting time playing as Gaul in RTW.  Normal mode, and I was rather failing.  I wanted to take Rome so badly, I think I neglected Cispine Gaul.  The spanish and especially the Britons tore my original holdings apart, piece by piece, but I thought, who cares.

I destroyed the Julii, the SPQR, but the Brutii were relentless.  I was down to three settlements, and they just kept coming.  In a "fortune favors the bold moment", I took my biggest army ( the entire garrison of one city ) and launched it at them.  I had the numerical superiority, so I won that.  After a bit, I was able to push the Brutii back, and I thought, now that the money was rolling in, I could actually conquer again.

Then the Macedonians came.  I mean, what are they doing on the Italian Peninsula?  They went after me with a fullstack ( and a smaller, separate army ).  I thought I could beat them with some maneuvering, but I SERIOUSLY underestimated their phalanx.  Even outnumbering them 2 to 1, I lost.  They took city after city, and I was forced to retreat to the Scipii Island, where I quickly conquered their three cities there.

The loot was extremely profitable, but I'm facing problems.  The Macedonians seem to have a really far flung empire.  They've expanded to Africa, so I can't go there.  Normally, I'd turtle up and wait for all these massive empires to rip each other to shreds ( the Macedonians broke their alliance with the Brutii or Scipii ) but i'm losing money due to my army/navy upkeep.  I have about 60,000+ gold, but that'll go faster than you'd expect.

I'm thinking of expanding into western Europe, take out Spain, it would be a nice defensible position, on the extreme of the map.  Then maybe I could take back Gaul.

But I need someone to tell me how I can beat those filthy Macedonians.

We have a thread for this already; IIRC Jackrabbit made it.

That said, dealing with phalanxes is easy enough; just use expendable / tough troops to anchor them, then charge them in the side  or rear with cavalry and/or the stabbiest nutters Gallic gold can buy. Missile troops are also invaluable; if you can take out their cavalry, skirmishers will have a wow of a time whittling down phalanx numbers and drawing them out of formation, if you spend a little time micromanaging them.

Has anyone posted in it recently?

Also, yeah, I was thinking of using archers, the best archers in the game.  Foresters or something like that.  Hmmm....would peasants last long enough in combat to distract them?

The thread pops up fairly regularly.

Foresters are a good idea; peasants maybe not, since you're looking for something with enough morale to give you time for a sidecharge; peasants might run away too quickly. Try a warband or swordsmen, maybe.

E: Oh, and if you can get to Spain or southern Greece, stock up on Creatan Archers and Balearic and Rhodian slingers. They absolutely tear shit up; just remember that slingers have to have a clear line of sight or you'll get friendly fire.

I always use warbands.  I'm thinking I use them too much, when everyone else is using elite units.

If they're beating troops that are more expensive than they are, you haven't got a problem. That said, you want something with a little more punch to actually do the flank charge; swordsmen or whatever CC monsters Gaul gets, I can't remember.

This is a matter of finance really.  I need a well-planned campaign if I wanna survive.  Make a new elite army of shiny warriors, and grab enough cities quickly to pay for the upkeep.

That does it.  At the next opportunity ( and once I destroy the rebellion going on in one of my cities ) I'm taking back Europe.  I'm taking back Gaul.

Could you leave a link to the Jackrabbit thread?

The last post was in January.  I was actually gonna post there earlier, then the whole "it's 120 days" message popped up.

I've started playing Empire again. I didn't really enjoy it much when I first got it due to poor performance and its whole 'soullessness' and feel compared to Medieval and Rome. Don't ask me to explain that. But anyhow, I'm having a nice game with Poland-Lithuania even though I'm constantly desperately trying to think of ways to keep Austria from declaring war. But battles are fun, it's so soothing watching lines of men stand around just shooting at eachother. Mmh.

Medieval 2: Total War mods.

"Stainless Steel" is one of the go too mods for historical accuracy. Though I must admit I usually don't look for historical accuracy mods.

"Third Age: Total War" is a superb mod based of "The Lord of the Rings". It features Gondor, Rohan, Isenguard, Mordor, Harad, Rhun, Silven and High Elves as well as two Orcs factions. Maps have been made for Isenguard, Minith Tiril and more. It is really one of the best mods made.

Call of Warhammer: Huge number of new factions, units and scripted events based on the Warhammer Fantasy universe at the time of the Storm of Chaos. Quite unstable though, even if installed propery. Also the download is about 5gig compressed. You'd be looking for a 1.5 translated installation that comes in 5 parts. I recommend it highly, but it's very buggy which is a shame.

@Digital Hellhound: I'm yet to finish a game of Empire: Total War. It's a real shame because I enjoy the massive world map, it keep crashing though. I'll have to fiddle again with graphical extras.

Had the same issue when I played it a little while ago, though it ran sweet when it first came out, turning all the settings right down didnt seem to change a thing.  Rather miffed tbh.

Medievel 2 Kingdoms expansion pack Mods

Hyrule:Total War. I think that explains it pretty well.

Although, before anyone complains about canon, it's based off of UN's manga. Actually, just google him... he's done a lot of nice stuff.

I love TW, but all I have is Rome and Medieval 2. I never really had an interest in Japan or the era Empire is set in.
